| 101. | Emphemera. BROADSIDE SONG SHEET. Lon. early 19th century. woodcut headpiece. Single sheet measuring 7 1/2" x 10". It contains three songs, the longest of which is a 31 line ballad about John Paul Jones. "An American frigate, called the Richard by name/ Mounted guns forty-four, from New York she came/ To cruise in the channel of old England's fame/ With a noble commander, Paul Jones was his name..." An interesting survival. Seitz cites "Eight 4-line verses entitled Paul Jones. Printed at the Catnach Press..." -Seitz p. 200 which corresponds to this one except in length. A reading of the last stanza suggests that the final line of type had simply broken or fallen away, and that this song sheet was published anyway! $100 |
