CLIPPER SHIP CARD REFERENCES

Reference sources for vessels. . .
Cutler's GREYHOUNDS OF THE SEA and QUEENS OF THE WESTERN OCEAN; Fairburn's 6 volume work, MERCHANT SAIL; Howes & Matthews' 2 volume AMERICAN CLIPPER SHIPS, (ACS);Robinson & Dow's 3 volume SAILING SHIPS OF NEW ENGLAND, (SSNE); and Matthews' 2 volume AMERICAN MERCHANT SHIPS, (AMS).

For the images I used State Street Bank's 3 volume YANKEE SHIP SAILING CARDS (SS CARDS). The largest auction of clipper ship cards was the Siegel Sale, held June 13, 1990. I have referred to their pictorial catalog and prices realized, (SIEGEL SALE). Citations of prices at the Siegel Sale refer to identical cards in similar condition. The particular cards offered in this collection have never been on the market.

Finally, the most extensive collection of these cards is at the Peabody-Essex Museum in Salem, Mass. I compared the cards in this collection with their holdings of about 1500 cards, (PEABODY-ESSEX COLLECTION). Unless mentioned otherwise, each of the cards in this collection can be assumed to also be in the Peabody-Essex collection.
