Lon. 1767. 4to. 2 vols, in 1. v, 263; 268 pp. A wonderfully odd example of nationalistic paranoia evinced by the Seven Years War. In a series of letters and reprinted documents the author proposed to lay bare the designs of the French Court, assisted by Jesuit spies in London, to launch an attack by an army of 50,000 men, sent across the channel in flat bottomed boats. Contemporary calf binding with label. Hinges worn but holding. $500

103. Magoun, F.A. THE FRIGATE CONSTITUTION Salem, MA 1928. b/w plates, lines. Folio. xvii, 154 pp. Magoun’s reconstruction of famous ships. One of the Marine Research Society’s limited editions, being number 88 in a limited edition of 97 large paper copies, with an actual piece of the framework of the U.S. S. Constitution mounted on the front cover. McDonald calls this “the most famous (and expensive) of Marine Research Society books.” It is a lavish production, with folding plans, lines and plates throughout. Other vessels pictured in the book are a viking ship, the Santa Maria, the Mayflower, the Flying Cloud, and the Bluenose. With an extra full page gravure plate of the Constitution laid in. 104. Manuscript. ALICE. N.Y.Y.C. CRUISE 1928. Unpaginated. About 50 pp. manuscript entries. This is the manuscript account of a cruise in the 43 1/2 foot sloop made famous in the series of Alice books written by Gherardi Davis. She was designed by Herreshoff and named after Davis’ beloved wife. In this log they travel from New York to Newport and back, participate in races and social events, eat well, play poker, entertain visitors and go ashore occasionally. The log is kept by several of the crew. Davis himself came aboard after four days, just in time to get becalmed in shoal waters off Point Judith. They got a tow from the tug Moran. Final pages list supplies, charts, and equipment aboard. An interesting piece of yachting history. $200
105. Manuscript. FOUR LETTERS REGARDING WRECK OF A GLOUCESTER MACKEREL SCHOONER OFF EDGARTOWN. In April, 1852 the Gloucester fishing schooner William P. Dolliver went aground off Edgartown. She later came free and drifted farther from shore, “half a mile from the main land half her keel out quarter and bows much broken both masts and bowsprit gone.” She wound up “laying on her broadside” on a shoal nine miles from town. Most of her cargo, nearly 400 barrels of mackerel, was salvaged. Three of these letters, from Thomas Foster, describe the wreck and salvage efforts. The fourth, from Abraham Osborne, regards the salvage of materials from the vessel. $100

JOURNAL OF ROBERT N. FERRELL OF GREENBUSH, NY. 1849. PHOTOSTAT COPY. Folio. 18 leaves. Journal of a young man’s voyage around the Horn to California aboard the clipper ship Arkansas, June-December, 1849. On her arrival in San Francisco, the Arkansas went aground on Alcatraz Island. This is a photostatic copy of Ferrell’s journal, the original of which resides in the Bancroft Library. Twenty of these photostats were published, of which this is number seven. It is accompanied by a long handwritten note from the publisher and former owner of the journal, E.M. Francis, which explains the significance of the journal, its provenance, and publishes a picture of Ferrell. Scarce. OCLC locates only one institutional holding for this photostat edition. $150
107. Manuscript. LETTER BOOK FOR “MONTREAL YACHT AGENCY, MURRAY & WILLIAMS, 17 ST. JOHN ST. ROOM 19, MONTREAL.” 1894-1898. This is a copybook, typical of its period, of 1000 pages of correspondence, written and typed, concerning all manner of business for the firm of Murray & Williams, who seem to have done building and outfitting as well as repair. Many of the letters concern steam boilers and engines, and parts for each; other letters concern skiffs, runabouts, yachts, etc. being built or repaired. The firm seems to have been interested in vessels of up to 50 feet. Pages are numbered and indexed by addressee. Some of the letters are difficult to read, but all are legible with a little effort. A detailed look at the commercial affairs of a small boat building firm. $350

The author draws on all major contemporary sources, and top scholarship of later years. He also provides 1200 high quality line drawings. An indispensable reference work for modelers and historians. Building on the success of his first effort Melville continued his autobiographical portrait of these years. “Omoo” deals with the mutiny aboard Melville’s ship and his subsequent wanderings about various parts of Tahiti and other islands. With 24 pp. of publisher’s advertisements at back. Rebound in full brown morocco with raised bands, gilt lettering and gilt inner dentelles, with cloth from original covers bound in. $500

Signed by Moore with a four page ALs from L.G. Carr Laughton, editor of “The Mariner’s Mirror” to Moore, concerning Moore’s text and upcoming publications. (About 260 pp.) “Or universal dictionary of technical terms and sea phrases used in the construction, equipment, management and military operations of a ship.” With eight engraved plates at end displaying 119 figures. This is the scarce first edition of a useful work. In 1805 it was adapted to American useage and became the first nautical dictionary published in America. This one examining skin boats and compares them with similar craft of other cultures. All the volumes in this series are scarce and desirable. VG in lightly chipped dj. $350
125. (Norddeutscher Lloyd) THE OCEAN EXPRESS “BREMEN.” Munich. n.d. (but ca. 1930) Color and b/w plates. 4to. 192 pp. A most unusual work, entirely devoted to the interior decoration of the quadruple screw steamer built in 1929 for North German Lloyd. The forth ship of this name for the company, she displaced 52,000 tons and was capable of 28 1/2 knots. After introductions by Prof. de Groot and P. Biedermann, technical director of Norddeutscher Lloyd, we are taken on a photo tour of the vessel, from first class to tourist, with frequent color plates (these are artist’s renderings) of public spaces, shipboard shops, artwork, decorative motifs, etc. This is the most complete work of its kind that I’ve seen. Bound in red and gold art deco cover, which is rubbed and worn, spine chipped. Interior clean. $150

133. Parry, Capt. William E. JOURNAL OF THE THIRD VOYAGE FOR THE DISCOVERY OF A NORTH-WEST PASSAGE FROM THE ATLANTIC TO THE PACIFIC. Phil. 1826. b/w fldg. map. (xv) 232 pp. plus catalog. Parry’s plan to go southward into Prince Regent Inlet was foiled by conditions that forced him to winter at Port Bowen. He abandoned the Fury when she got trapped by more ice along the Somerset Island coast. This American edition was published the same year as the London edition. Sabin 58867. Signed by the artist, the printer and both binders. A suite of seven etchings laid in a folder with accompanying descriptions in letterpress. Text printed by Harold McGrath at Hampshire Typothetae. The upper cover of the folder is in full black niger morocco with the figure of a whale’s head in full bas-relief, by David Bourbeau of the Thistle Bindery. All housed in a quarter leather tray case produced by Gray Parrot. Light wear to cloth portions of case. The folder is in Fine condition. A breathtaking production. $2500
