Folio, xv, 497 pp. Part of a series which included works on Yachtsmen, Hunting and suchlike, in the years following the First World War. Over one hundred of these gents are profiled here, along with the shipping lines they worked for, and the ships of those lines. In addition there are historical articles on London River, Clyde, Mersey, Tyne, Humber, Bristol and other shipping centers, as well as Lloyd's, and other insurance companies, the fisheries, and shipping in WWI. The book purports to be a series of communications proposing and planning for an invasion of France by the British, which, naturally enough, was being used to whip up anti-British sentiment in France. The editors publish them here in hopes of vindicating Britain from those erroneous interpretations of their feelings. Title page tipped in with tape, bottom edge torn with slight loss to imprint. Otherwise a nice copy, bound in later full calf. Scarce. $225 |
