106. Thompson, (Edward). SAILOR’S LETTERS, WRITTEN TO HIS SELECT FRIENDS IN ENGLAND DURING HIS VOYAGES AND TRAVELS IN EUROPE, ASIA, AFRICA AND AMERICA FROM THE YEAR 1754 TO 1759. Lon. 1767. 2 vols. x, 166, (4); 138 pp. Second, corrected edition of a book first published the previous year. Thompson was a Royal Navy Commodore who served in the West Indies during the American Revolution. His observations on America are pre-revolution, and are recorded in vol. II, from New York - “I was never so much surprised, as in finding this part of the world superior to England,” and the West Indies. He also writes from India, Ceylon, and St. Helena, as well as Europe. The second volume contains his famous poem defending the rights of blacks. According to the DNB this work is also noted for Thompson’s insights into social life in the Royal Navy, and an account of the battle of Quibeon Bay. VG, the two volumes bound together in later full calf with label. Rather scarce. OCLC shows only 7 libraries in America holding copies. $750

108. Turnbull, John. A VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD, IN THE YEARS 1801, 1802, 1803, AND 1804... Phila. 1810. (2) 364 pp. First American edition of a work published in London in 1805. It recounts an Englishman’s voyage to speculate in the northwest fur trade. “Though the voyage was a financial failure, it did obtain interesting information about various South Sea islands, such as Norfolk Island, Tahiti, Hawaii and the Tonga Islands ” — Hill 1725, 1727, noting, “The American edition is very scarce.” Forbes I, 414. Title and prelims waterstained, pages tanned. Original calf boards, rebacked antique style to match, with gilt rules and spine label. $750

Unpaginated (29 pp.) Roster of the newly-reorganized Pacific Fleet, printed aboard the USS West Virginia. Lists of officers organized by vessel, from the flagship down to torpedo boats, with shore stations included. “F.E. Wetmore, printer. U.S.S. West Virginia.” Scarce sample of shipboard printing. No holding for this year on OCLC, though they do locate a copy of the 1909 edition. Sunned around top and backstrip of front cover, else VG in original printed wrappers. $125 See Illustration
110. Van de Water, Frederic. THE REAL MCCOY. NY. 1931. b/w plates. 305 pp. One of the classics of fishing schooner lore. Famed rumrunner Bill McCoy fell in love with Gloucester schooner Arethusa and ultimately purchased her as his floating headquarters and chief accomplice in the dangerous and romantic smuggling trade. Van de Water was a professional journalist, and this tale was his best effort. The American slang phrase “The Real McCoy” originated as a tribute to the high quality of Bill McCoy’s booze. You heard it here... This copy is a first edition INSCRIBED BY McCOY IN 1935, with a letter from the person to whom he inscribed it. Backstrip lightly sunned, else VG. $200 See Illustration

114. Weddell, James. A VOYAGE TOWARDS THE SOUTH POLE, PERFORMED IN THE YEARS 1822-24. CONTAINING AN EXAMINATION OF THE ANTARCTIC SEA... Lon. 1825. Color frontis., plates, charts. (IV) 276 PP. “And a visit to Tierra del Fuego, with a particular account of its inhabitants. To which is added much useful information on the coasting navigation of Cape Horn, and the adjacent lands, with charts of harbours, &c.” Weddell was a sealing captain who spent much time in southern waters, especially the South Orkney, South Shetland and South Georgia Islands in the early 1820s. He wintered in the Falklands and gave his name to the Weddell Sea. Hill 1843. Spence 1246. Rosove 345. First edition, with errata slip and 16 pages of advertisements dated Sept. 1825, preceded by 4 pages of adverts. corresponding to Rosove 345b. It is a very nice copy, with pages untrimmed, bound in original bluish gray boards, rebacked to match, with printed spine label. Color frontispiece is fresh and clean. Some of the maps show light offsetting, but all are clean and in good repair. The 15 unlisted maps and plates also correspond exactly to Rosove’s placement. $4000 See Illustration

Gloucester. 1887. b/w folding map. 36 pp. Some interesting stats during the heyday of the Gloucester fishing industry. But also a promotional piece for the American Fish Bureau, which began collecting statistics in 1885. This is the only issue I have ever seen cited, and I believe it was the only one printed. Illustrated wraps. VG in protective folder and slipcase. $75
116. Williams, John G. THE ADVENTURES OF A SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD LAD AND THE FORTUNES HE MIGHT HAVE WON. Bos. 1894. b/w plates. x-308 pp. Williams was a Canadian-born lad who sailed on a Duxbury whaler which he deserted in southwest Australia. He seems to have hopped from ship to ship and made whaling trips which included stops at Sydney, Lord Howe Island, and Hobart, as well as Fiji and Tonga. Some actual whaling incidents are recounted, but Williams’ career was far more wide-ranging, including gold mining in California and Australia. VG. Forster 105. Howes W-465. Jenkins p. 160. 117. Wood, William Maxwell. WANDERING SKETCHES OF PEOPLE AND THINGS IN SOUTH AMERICA, POLYNESIA, CALIFORNIA, AND OTHER PLACES VISITED, DURING A CRUISE ON BOARD OF THE U. S. SHIPS LEVANT, PORTSMOUTH, AND SAVANNAH Phila. 1849. x-386 pp. Wood was a naval surgeon who later accompanied the Far East Squadron to China and Japan (and wrote another book about it.) Hill notes that on this voyage, after stops in the Pacific and Hawaii, Wood was traveling in Mexico when the Mexican was broke out, and escaped via Vera Cruz. “The intelligence gathered by Wood in Mexico was instrumental in the U.S. seizure of California by Commodore Sloat.” - Hill 1910.
