| 77. | Whaling Manuscript. LETTER FROM MRS. BECKWITH TO MRS. HATHAWAY REGARDING THE WHALESHIP CHEROKEE. 3 1/2 pp. Mrs. Beckwith, in Edgartown, mentions the arrival of the Cherokee at the Western Islands with 89 barles of Sperm-oil, and pleads for Mrs. Hathaway, the wife of the owners, to send money, which she desperately needs. The Cherokee, Henry Eldridge, master, was on an Indian Ocean voyage, 1865-1869. This rather pathetic and moving letter was sent about 4 months after her sailing from Edgartown. $200 |

By Ambrose Taylor late of the Ship Hannibal of New London to collect Taylors lay, etc. Dated on March 16th, 1846. Left the ship in Feby 1845 and, owes nobody except Dr. Brainard Together with a leaf noting that Taylor was Taken sick on the Coast of California with Rhumatism Witness Capt. John. Brook Adam Menard. With his 6 months aboard, and lay of 1/150th of 1, 800 bbls (fine work for 6 months!) figured out on the sheet. Starbuck mentions that Captain Brown came home sick but omits the fact that John Brook took over as master - as this paper proves. $200 |

List of goods and services provided by Montgomery Parker, US Consul at Cape Verde islands, and clearly a most enterprising individual - able to meet a wide variety of the ships needs. James Nichols and the Lion departed Providence in 1849 and returned home in 1853 with 1876 bbl. sperm oil. $150 |

| 81. | Whaling Manuscript. VOYAGE ACCOUNTS OF THE SHIP ELIZA ADAMS OF FAIRHAVEN ON HER PACIFIC VOYAGE, 1835-1838. Folio and 4to.,4 sheets of manuscript entries. This record includes shore expenses, an insurance receipt from 1837, Proforma Sales Sperm Oil, an order from one John X Adams to settle his voyage (1835, at Edgartown), James A. Nortons receipt for his portion of oil, dated at Fairhaven, 1838, and an account of oil landed from Ship E. Adams at Valparaiso & Callao, 1837 - evidently to pay the lay of men discharged at these ports. With the note The following men help. git 1001 Bbls. The first and last papers undoubtedly in the hand of the Master, John O. Morse. Quite unusual. $350 |
| 82. | Whaling Manuscript. WHALING LETTERS OF CAPT. SHADRACH R. TILTON, BARK VALPARAISO, TO AGENTS HATHAWAY & LUCE, 1852-1862. Nine pages manuscript. The Valparaiso sailed from New Bedford Oct 14, 1852 and returned May 19, 1856 with 535 sperm, 768 whale oil, and 1400 pound bone, having sent home 373 sperm and 9631 bone - a busy and prosperous trip. In these six letters Tilton writes his agents about taking command, recruiting a crew, progress of the voyage (three of the letters are from Honolulu, describing it as the Damest of all places, and concerning crew trouble, losses and fatalities). The last letter is from 1862 and concerns a suit brought against Tilton by a crewman who was flogged. A fascinating lot. $2000 |
