251. Troost, Lewis. REPORT ON THE FORMATION OF A HARBOR FOR THE CITY OF MOBILE. Mobile. 1867. 32, (1) pp. Troost was a vice president and chief engineer of the Mobile Harbor and Railroad Co., and this was his revue possibilities for improving the port facilities there. It includes a close survey of tides, currents, shoals, etc, and a revue of various plans for making the harbor workable, including lifting vessels by means of a camel, and a canal from the Gulf of Mexico. 253. U.S. Department of State. THE UNITED STATES CONSULAR SYSTEM: MANUAL FOR CONSULS, AND ALSO FOR MERCHANTS, SHIPOWNERS AND MASTERS IN THEIR CONSULAR TRANSACTIONS. Wash. 1856. 347, 79, xviii pp “Comprising the instructions of the department of state in regard to consular emoluments, duties, privileges and liabilities.” Throughout the 19th century America’s consuls in various ports were lifelines for our burgeoning mercantile fleet. They handled trade affairs, ironed out political wrinkles and provided services to shipowners, officers and crew. These are laid out in great detail here, along with a history of the consular service beginning in 1792. Also reproduced are 77 pages of the various forms that consuls might be expected to fill out in the course of their labors. This book is a necessary reference for anyone seriously interested in understanding 19th century maritime affairs. It is presented to M. S. Ferris by James Buchanan, though the signature is probably secretarial. VG in original government cloth. $150

The present book enlarges the central chapters and brings them up to date. It features 162 illustrations, over 50 of which are folding plates. One section of the book is devoted to the Mauretania and the Lusitania which were then the latest thing. VG $50

Wash. 1813. 4 pp. This was meant to encourage American privateering, and it succeeded. It accompanied a bill to allow a bounty to privateers as well. Such measures insured that our forces would continue to harass British shipping. Removed from larger volume, complete in itself. VG.. $25
269. Waterton, Charles. WANDERINGS IN SOUTH AMERICA, THE NORTH-WEST OF THE UNITED STATES, AND THE ANTILLES. Lon. 1825. b/w plates and ills. in text. 4to. vii, 326 pp. First edition of a famous and very popular book in its day. It is the sum of the author’s five voyages from England to South America. According to Borba de Moraes, “The value of Waterton’s work lies in the fact that he was the first to observe and describe ‘d’ apres nature’ the birds and animals of the tropics.” Borba de Moraes p. 937. Waterton was quite an eccentric, he went through the jungles in bare feet, wrestled snakes and alligators, and slept on the floor at home. He was an expert taxidermist, and brought back the head and shoulders of what he claimed was a new species of monkey. “His country neighbors in Yorkshire believed he had a real stuffed human being on his premises, which almost caused a local riot.” Hill 1833. Howes W-158. The creature in question is illustrated on the frontispiece. Bound in old morocco over blindstamped boards. Spine top chipped, back board detached, but a nice copy internally, clean and wide margined, of a classic travel account. $200

271. Wilgus, William. LIFE OF CAPTAIN STEWART DEAN. Ascutney, VT. 1942. b/w plates. 76 pp. plus folding tables. Dean was born in Maryland and went to sea as a young man, and commanded several privateers during the Revolutionary War. He was a resident of Albany, and there he built the 60 foot sloop Experiment, which he sailed down the Hudson and thence to China on an early American China trading voyage, the first of several he would make before the turn of the century. Scarce biography of a little known naval hero and China Trade pioneer. VG $150
