1. A.W. Auner (Publisher). PURITAN AND GENESTA. A broadsheet measuring 7 3/4 x 4 1/2 inches, on which is printed a 32 line poem in 4 stanzas entitled “Puritan and Genesta” about the 1885 Americas Cup race, by one who styles himself “Peter Peppercorn.” It is to be sung to the tune of “Yankee Doodle” and it features a small woodcut of a yacht at the top of the sheet. Auner was a card and job printer in Philadelphia. This item probably appeared shortly after the race. A rare little piece of paper, not in Toy, Morris & Howland or Rulon Miller. OCLC shows only a single library holding this item. Very Good condition. $100
2. Adams, John Quincy. THE DUPLICATE LETTERS, THE FISHERIES AND THE MISSISSIPPI. DOCUMENTS RELATING TO TRANSACTIONS AT THE NEGOTIATION OF GHENT. Wash. 1822. x 256 (3) pp. Adams was one of the commissioners who negotiated the treaty with Great Britain at the end of the War of 1812. America wanted to retain the fisheries rights she’d won in the Revolution and Britain attempted to bargain these rights against free navigation of the Mississippi River - a move that seems rather whimsical now. The commissioners departed without settling anything, and the rights of American fishermen in Canadian waters began to erode. This work was intended by Adams to shore up those rights. See McFarland pp. 152-159. Bound in original paper over boards with printed spine label. Pages tanned but uncut and untrimmed. A Rare piece of fisheries history. $300

Lon. 1804. iv, 107, 48 pp. Apparently, a propaganda piece from the Napoleonic Wars. The book purports to be a series of communications proposing and planning for an invasion of France by the British, which, naturally enough, was being used to whip up anti-British sentiment in France. The editors publish them here in hopes of vindicating Britain “from those erroneous interpretations of their feelings.” Title page tipped in with tape, bottom edge torn with slight loss to imprint. Otherwise a nice copy, bound in later full calf. Scarce. $200
9. Anon. THE SHIPWRECK OF THE ALCESTE, AN ENGLISH FRIGATE, IN THE STRAITS OF GASPAR; ALSO THE SHIPWRECK OF THE MEDUSA. 11. Arago, Jacques Etienne Victor. VOYAGE AUTOUR DU MONDE. Bruxelles. 1840 b/w lithos. 570 pp. Brussels reprint of a Paris edition of Arago’s book of which Hill says, “This richly illustrated edition is much prized. The additional scientific data was written by... a relative of the author’s.” The Paris edition had colored plates, this edition has b/w plates. In either case the 61 plates are lively renderings of the people of the Pacific Islands by Arago, the artist on a French scientific expedition that circled the globe in 1817-1820. Among the expedition’s stops were Australia, Hawaii, Tonga and Tierra del Fuego. “The original ship, wrecked off the Falkland Islands, was replaced by the Physicienne which visited Rio de Janeiro. Captain Louis Freycinet’s wife, Rose, was smuggled on board at the advent of the voyage and made the complete journey, causing a great deal of discord among the crew... These entertaining letters, written in a lively and witty literary style, provide vivid descriptions of the topography and the inhabitants of the Pacific islands.” See Hill, 28-32. Forbes 1133 for similar editions, and Ferguson, 2906. Rebound in serviceable brown buckram. Scattered foxing and some water staining, not much of it, happily, affecting the marvelous plates. $250

15. Baillie, Rev. John. A MEMOIR OF CAPTAIN W. THORNTON BATE, RN. Lon. 1859. b/w plates. xvi, 257 pp. Bates was a “disciple of the cross,” but this didn’t prevent him from having adventures with shipwrecks and pirates, which are recounted in detail here, along with his religious work. Bate also took part in the Opium War and spent much time in far eastern waters. Three of the plates were drawn by him there. An interesting and lively little book, despite the holier-than-thou posture of the author. Full calf prise binding, spine label lacking, else VG. $125

Bos. 1895. b/w frontis., plates. 38, (2) pp. Ball was a native of Block Island, and he arrived in California in 1849 aboard the General Cobb. As well as a tabular account of his many voyages, Ball has included in his book an “Itemized Gold Mining Record” which, along with his notes, indicates that he made a few dollars in the gold fields. Several interesting illustrations of mining operations accompany his report. Evidently he spent his money well back home, because the whole account is capped off with an illustration of the Ocean View Hotel on Block Island, which he owned. An eccentric and scarce book. Hill 68 says “Barrow gives a most interesting account of the later fortunes of the mutineers; also an account of the voyage and wreck of the Pandora, bringing back the mutineers from Tahiti; the trial of the mutineers; letters written by...
