From 1823 to 1825 he held a similar post in the Brazilian Navy. He achieved success against Spain and vindicated his reputation. After aiding the Greek navy in a similar capacity, he was pardoned in 1832. His life and career were also a major source for Patrick O’Brian’s fictional naval officer, Jack Aubrey. If you liked Aubrey’s adventures in “Wine-Dark Sea” you'll love the real adventures recounted here. Second edition, published the same year as the first. 40. (Forbes, Robert B.) VOYAGE OF THE JAMESTOWN ON HER ERRAND OF MERCY. Bos. 1847. b/w plate. 27, cliv pp. In 1847 congress authorized two warships, the Jamestown and the Macedonian, to carry supplies to Ireland to help relieve the effects of the potato famine. The brilliant merchant, Robert Bennet Forbes, captained the Jamestown and wrote this report of the errand of mercy. Although interesting in its own right, it is noteworthy also because the frontispiece is a full page lithograph of the Jamestown sailing out of Boston, done by Fitz Hugh Lane. See Wilmerding, p. 187. A scarce publication whose value seems to be increasing astronomically, probably because of the Lane print. I saw a copy in New York a few years ago, bound in later boards, for $3000. This copy has been skillfully rebacked and is in original blindstamped covers with gold lettering. It is inscribed by Forbes on the front blank to a Captain Eldridge, and also signed in blue ink by a later owner.
