1. Ackers, George Holland. UNIVERSAL YACHT SIGNALS. Lon. 1851. Hand colored flag signals. xxii, 264 pp. Ackers states clearly in his introduction that he is basing his system on Captain Marryat’s code, with minor alteration to the number of flags. His remarks are illustrated by six pages of colored flag signals, which are followed by lengthy lists of general signals, where numbers generated by the signal flags correspond to certain phrases. Second edition, bound in straight grained black morocco. Some scuffing to binding. Text and plates in excellent condition. Inscribed “Rara Avis 1858” on front blank. $650 See Illustration
2. Amundsen, Roald. DIE EROBERUNG DES SUDPOLS. Munich. 1912. Both these volumes contain crisp, tidy pencil annotations in German by a Croatian scholar named Resekar (?) who owned this set and signed each title page in 1912. 2 vols, VG. $300 See Illustration
3. Andree, S.A., Nils Strindberg and Knut Fraenkel. THE ANDREE DIARIES. Lon. (1931). b/w plates, fldg. maps. xx, 471 pp. In 1930 the Norwegian expedition Bratvaag stumbled across the death camp of the Swedish balloon expedition led by S.A. Andree in 1897. 4. Anon. BOOK OF TRADES. Phila. 1847. b/w wood engravings. 16mo. 191 pp. This charming little book measures 2 3/4 x 3 1/4 inches. It contains descriptions of about 45 trades, each with an illustration representative of that trade. Of particular interest are Fisherman, Sailor, Sailmaker, Shipwright and Caulker, though Button Maker, Knife Grinder and Seegar Maker sound full of promise as well. Quite scarce. 5. Anon. STATEMENT OF CERTAIN IMMORAL PRACTICES PREVAILING IN HIS MAJESTY'S NAVY: ADDRESSED TO THE LORDS COMMISSIONERS OF THE ADMIRALTY. Lon. 1822. vi, 40 pp. This work is referred to on the title page as the “second edition.” The author tells us it was published eight months after the initial pamphlet and that, “the Lords of the Admiralty (have) deemed it inexpedient to adopt any measures for preventing the evils which this statement was drawn up to expose.” So we can assume this renewed effort is different from the first in some respects. The primary complaint seems to be women on board, although there is some mention of buggery on pages 25-26 (referred to as “unnatural crimes.”) The juiciest of the eyewitness accounts are, alas, blanked out, but it is abundantly clear they were having themselves quite a time. An excellent copy, clean and fresh, bound in plain wraps. $750

Small folio sheet measuring 8 x 11 1/2 inches. Fourteen stanzas of eight lines each, beginning, “Men,women, youths and maidens watch/At Eastport’s wharf, and say:/O why is the New-England boat/so very late today?” This is a real oddity among shipwreck broadsides. Instead of bemoaning the tragic loss of men, women and children this is a celebration of the fact that, “Not one was lost! - Not One!” A pretty production, with attractive type border and the cut of a fresh-faced young lady opposite the lines “The blooming virgin in her teens/with all her winning charms.” Framed $350 See Illustration
