53. Davis, R.C. REMINISCENCES OF A VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD. Ann Arbor, Michigan. 1869. 321 pp. Davis was assistant librarian and the University of Michigan. His voyage included stops at San Francisco, Rio, Hawaii and other Pacific Islands. He was an articulate writer; his description of shipboard life and equipment are particularly interesting. Scarce, not in Smith or Hill. Forbes 2825, who notes that "much of the Hawaii text is concerned with day-to-day activities of common seamen." Tide mark in lower corner of last few pages, some bubbling to cloth binding, but soundly bound in original cloth. $250
54. de Lesseps, Ferdinand. RECOLLECTIONS OF FORTY YEARS. Lon. 1887. 2 vols. xiii, 313; vi, 320 pp. plus publisher’s ads. A diplomat and engineer, de Lesseps began negotiating the Suez Canal in the 1830s. It was begun in 1859 and completed to great fanfare in 1869. De Lessep’s fame qualified him for the Panama Canal project, which did not work out nearly as well. De Lesseps and his son Charles were tried for mismanagement and misappropriation of company funds. They were fined and sentenced to prison, but the sentences were never executed. There are copies of this book available, but none in as Fine condition as this. Lon. 1901. b/w plates. colored charts, and large folding maps in back pocket. lxxxvi, 191-482, 20 pp. Scarce account, being VII in the Second Series of Hakluyt publications. Narratives of this Spanish expedition appeared in parts and pieces over the years, but this is the first complete account, reconstructed from half a dozen manuscript sources. With color reproductions of manuscript charts. Ex-lib from the Workingman’s Library, but nice copies otherwise. 2 vols. $400
57. (Deperthes, J.L.H.S.) HISTOIRE DES NAUFRAGES... Paris. 1815 b/w plates. 3 vols. xvii, 400; 402; 391 pp. New edition, edited by J.B.B. Eyries, of a classic shipwreck compilation first published in 1781. Huntress 88C cites an 1821 edition redone by Eyries. Polak 3283, 3284, lists two editions, undated and 1836, neither of which this one is. Bound in full calf. Front board of vol. 1 nearly detached, chipping and worming to spine ends. Not as ugly as it sounds. Text clean and engraved plates fresh. $250 See Illustration

Lon. 1806. b/w frontis. 4to, ii, 309, (19), (6) pp. A chronological and statistical look at the Royal Navy up to and including Nelson’s time. Cowie, in his bibliography on Nelson, says of this work, “valuable for non-operational subjects... contains useful statistics.” Cowie 361. A nice clean copy bound in calf over marbled boards with spine label. Binding worn, bottom of spine chipped/ $200
59. Dickenson, Jonathan. THE SHIPWRECK AND DREADFUL SUFFERINGS OF ROBERT BARROW... Salem, OH. 1826. 12mo. x-120 pp. 19th century retelling of one of the earliest and most famous American shipwreck accounts. Barrow was a Quaker missionary enroute from Jamaica to Philadelphia. His ship, the Reformation, wrecked off the Florida coast. The survivors were captured by Indians and finally made their way to Charleston. The first edition of this account was published in 1699. This Ohio imprint is quite unusual, being listed in Howes as an "aa". Huntress 28C. Howes D-317. Bound in contemporary sheep over boards. Minor staining, pages tanned, spine ends worn, but a good solid copy. Scarce in the trade. $350
60. Dow, George Francis. SLAVE SHIPS AND SLAVING. Salem. 1927. 4to. b/w plates. xxxv, 349 pp. Number 66 in a limited edition of 97 copies on large paper, specially bound in cloth over marbled boards. English and American slaving 17th-19th centuries, with discussions of typical vessels, equipment, etc. A Fine copy in original glassine wrapper (which is chipped) in slipcase. $400
61. Downing, Twogood. THE FAN-QUI IN CHINA, IN 1836-7 Lon., 1838. b/w frontis., title cuts. 12mo. xiv, 316; xi, 306; xii, 327 pp. Downing’s narrative was written after the demise of the East India Company’s exclusive charter for trade in China, and on the eve of the first Opium War. It is thus a first hand account of the wildest period in the China Trade. All the specifics of opium and tea trades are laid out, as well as the mechanics of other sorts of commerce, local life and customs, etc. It is a detailed and revealing narrative that lays open the life and culture of this fascinating place, and the interactions of the Chinese with “Fan-Qui” - foreign interlopers. Cordier 74. Lust 218, who calls it, “noteworthy for it close observation, very revealing for British attitudes towards China at the time.” Frontispiece lacking from vol. II. Circular library stamps on each title page, else a VG set, clean and tightly bound in half morocco over marbled boards. Scarce in the trade. $750

63. Duckworth, S.G. SHIP JOINERY... NY. 1924. b/w plates. 215 pp. “The woodwork fittings of a modern steel vessel.” But the techniques and styles predate steel construction. Sections on tools and techniques, as well as highly detailed (and illustrated) chapters on quarters, skylights, bulkheads, ladders and stairs, dining saloon, pantry, etc. An invaluable source, and quite scarce. 64. Durand, James. THE LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF JAMES R. DURAND. Rochester, NY. 1820. 12mo. iv-129 pp. Durand was born in New Haven. After an early career on American merchant ships, he joined the Navy in 1804 and served aboard John Adams, Enterprise, and Constitution in the Mediterranean during and after the Barbary wars. Upon leaving the service (he went AWOL from Constitution in 1806) he joined a merchant brig bound for France, but was captured by HMS Shannon and impressed into the British navy. Durand remained in the British Navy from that time until discharged in 1815. He was serving on the British brig Narcissus during the War of 1812 when that ship was ordered to attack Stonington, Connecticut, and tells about that event in this biography. An early reprint of a book first published three years earlier. See Howes D-591. Bound in original calf over boards with printed cover. Tear on outer edge of title with loss of a few letters in copyright notice on verso. A few spots and some tanning, still an excellent copy of a very scarce book. It was reprinted in 1926 and a copy of that reprint accompanies the book. $1500 See Illustration

66. Englert, Father Sebastian. ISLAND AT THE CENTER OF THE WORLD. NY. (1970) Color photos and b/w ills. 191 pp. “New light on Easter Island.” Englert was for 34 years a priest on the island. He recounts waves of immigration, island script and statues and theorizes violent events ending the island’s golden age. Terrific color photos. VG, in worn dj. $35
67. Ephemera. BLUEPRINT OF SEVEN MASTED SCHOONER THOMAS W. LAWSON. Framed blueprint measures 24 x 52. Detailed hull, sail and deck plans of this famous vessel, the only 7-masted schooner, launched in 1901 and sunk in 1907. The blueprint is signed “G.B. Douglas 1926.” Matted and framed under glass. A wonderful display item, but obviously I won’t be mailing this anywhere. For pick up only. $300

Illustrations would have been nice, but this circular instructs us that drawings and patterns may be seen at the Admiralty Office. Untrimmed, sewn as issued. $150

Folio. 4 pp. Addressed to captains and officers, this document contains 12 orders for how to proceed with cod fishing off Newfoundland, including jurisdictions and choices of moorings. In addition it provides samples of forms that captains would have to fill out. A lovely copy, printed on green-tinted paper. A rare document in Fine condition . $750

72. Ephemera. TRADE CATALOG FROM WHEELER SHIPYARD Brooklyn, NY n.d. Oblong 4to, folded. 8 pp. Wheeler was commissioned in 1934 to build Hemingway’s 40 foot fishing boat Pilar, which he used in Cube from 1939 - 1960. This catalog, which dates from 1929 or 1930, gives a brief history of the yard, then describes and pictures several of its boats in the 20 -38 foot class, including a 36 foot fisherman that must have been very much like Pilar. Dramatic full-page lithographed illustrations of whales and whale bones are clean and fresh. Rebound in red buckram. VG. $250

Lon. 1863. b/w plates and ills. ix, (3) 317 pp. “A treatise on English and foreign boats, descriptive of the various forms of Boats and sails of every nation...” The first half of the book is devoted mostly to English working boats, including lifeboats and ice boats.
