172. Willis, George E. THE STORY OF OUR CRUISE IN THE U.S. FRIGATE “COLORADO,” FLAGSHIP OF THE ASIATIC FLEET - 1870-71-72. n.p. (1873) 149 pp. Here’s an interesting shipwreck of a book. This scarce narrative (OCLC locates only 4 copies. None available in the trade) is without covers. The lower corner of the last 20 pages is torn, resulting in loss of some text on the final 10 pages. But the narrative of Willis’ voyage is complete and intact, the loss affecting snatches of poetry and quotations from letters. More interesting are two brief notes and a piece of a document from the book’s former owner, John Stack. The first letter is to his sister, offering to send her money and is signed and dated from the Colorado in Key West. The second letter says “Dear Sista. Dont write no more untill i tell you i think i will leave this ship i got into trouble.” Family notes on the book and accompanying it indicate that Strack deserted the Colorado in 1875. A poignant archive. $100
173. Smith and Son, W. H., publishers. PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE GREAT EASTERN STEAM-SHIP. Lon. n.d. (ca. 1858?) Folio. 42 pp. First edition of a rare work, with a superb folding color chromolithographed frontispiece, after a painting by Edwin Weedon, and 2 additional full page folio color chromolithographed plates, 4 folding wood engraved plates, and many illustrations in text. Publishers capitalized on the size and splendor of the Great Eastern, but none of the books published before or after the launch compares with this. The folding litho is cracked at folds and there is some waterstaining along the margins of the color plates, not affecting the images. Rebound in cloth over marbled boards. A good copy of a rare and impressive book. $1750 See Illustration
