| 55. | Hall, Daniel Weston. ARCTIC ROVINGS: OR, THE ADVENTURES OF A NEW BEDFORD BOY ON SEA AND LAND. Bos. 1861. b/w frontispiece. 171 pp. plus advert. This New Bedford boy certainly had some adventures. In 1856 he shipped on the whaler Condor of New Bedford. After deserting in Siberia he joined the Daniel Wood, also of New Bedford, for the Hawaiian Islands, before he returned home on the Frances Henrietta. Halls narrative contains much hard factual matter, but is written in a highly dramatic manner, possibly because the account first appeared in embryonic form in the local New Bedford newspaper. Forster 469. Jenkins p. 106. Forbes 2422, who notes that Halls father won a lawsuit against his captain for abandoning him in the Arctic.Original cloth binding, lightly worn at spine ends, else a VG copy of a scarce whaling narrative. $750 See Illustration |

| 60. | Holman, James. A VOYAGE ROUND THE WORLD, INCLUDING TRAVELS IN AFRICA, ASIA, AUSTRALIA, AMERICA... Lon. 1834, 1835 b/w plates, some folding. 4 vols. x, 491; xiv, 492; xv, 473; vii, 519 pp. We listed this lovely set in catalog 166, only to find it was lacking one plate. Were offering it again here at a suitably reduced price because its too lovely a set and too neat a story to send back whence it came. Holman served in the Royal Navy until being invalided out in 1810. Though he had become totally blind he had an irrepressible spirit, and undertook this journey around the world. It is ironic and charming that a book written by a blind man should prominently feature illustrations, but this work has 22 (of 23) handsome lithograph plates, some folding, from drawings made by members of Holmans party. Interestingly this work is overlooked by Hill, Taylor and Cox, but appears in such subject bibliographies as Ferguson, Bibliography of Australia II, 1802, Toussaints Bibliography of Mauritius D-723, and Mendelssohns Bibliography of South Africa p. 728. Handsomely rebound in diced calf, rebacked to match with gilt decorations and spine labels. Quite attractive! $1250 |

| 65. | (Jackson, Andrew and Comm. Jesse Duncan Elliott.) SOME CORRESPONDENCE ABOUT A CURIOUS HISTORICAL FACT. Worcester, (MA). 1874. 12mo 11 pp. In 1839 Elliot returned from Syria on the USS Constitution, with the sarcophagus of Emperor Alexander Severeus. It was his intention that this should serve as a vessel for the eventual burial of Andrew Jackson. However, in 1845 Jackson, ever the populist, declined the offer, writing Elliott, I cannot consent that my mortal body shall be laid in a repository prepared for an Emperor or a King. Of course, all this was politically related to Elliotts squabble with Perry, which dated back to the War of 1812, and which was still being fought out in 1839. In original purple printed wrappers, lightly sunned and worn. A fascinating sidelight of maritime history. Quite scarce, having been published in a edition of 25 copies.
