101. Tripp, Lot. DIRECTIONS FOR MARINERS ON VOYAGES IN HOT AND COLD CLIMATES; HOW TO TREAT THE SICK, AND TO USE THE MEDICINES CONTAINED THE CHEST. NY. 1838 12mo 22 pp. This pamphlet was intended to accompany the ship’s medicine chest. Each medicine in the chest was numbered. Each disease is described symptomatically, in the pamphlet, and the appropriate treatment is given by citing the number of the medicine to be administered. Thus, Bloody Flux is described on p. 12. Bottles no. 3 and 4 - Castor Oil and Rhubarb are prescribed. According to the title page, the medicine chest was put up by Silas Carle & Nephew, at Fulton and Water streets in New York. Though this title is rare - no copies listed on OCLC (the Blunt Library at Mystic Seaport seems to own an earlier edition) - the type of pamphlet turns up occasionally, since one was printed to accompany every medicine chest that ever set sail. 102. Troost, Lewis. REPORT ON THE FORMATION OF A HARBOR FOR THE CITY OF MOBILE. Mobile. 1867. 32, (1) pp. Troost was a vice president and chief engineer of the Mobile Harbor and Railroad Co., and this was his revue possibilities for improving the port facilities there. It includes a close survey of tides, currents, shoals, etc, and a revue of various plans for making the harbor workable, including lifting vessels by means of a camel, and a canal from the Gulf of Mexico. Seaton Schroeder, U.S.N., 1881.” With about two dozen folding recognition views of the coast. Frequent updated tipped into text. Some cover wear. VG. $100

107. (Wainwright, Lt. Commander Richard.) LOG OF THE U.S. GUNBOAT GLOUCESTER... Annapolis. 1899. b/w plates. 188 pp. The Gloucester, a fast and well-armed auxiliary vessel, was originally the yacht Corsair. She was instrumental in sinking two Spanish destroyers during the Spanish American War. VG in decorated covers, which show light foxing. This was the copy of a crewman, W. H. Sellers, who is mentioned several times in the book and who has inscribed it onboard the Gloucester. It is accompanied by two photographic postcards, Sellers’ discharge papers, a clothing and a small stores requisition from the Gloucester signed by Wainwright, her commander. The lot, $150

The Collingwood arrived at Monterey a few days after the American flag was raised...” - Hill 1815. 109. Welch, J.J. A TEXT BOOK OF NAVAL ARCHITECTURE. Lon. 1907. b/w ills., plates, many folding. 332 pp. Welch, a professor at the University of Durham and Instructor at the Royal Naval College, wrote this textbook to be used by officers of the Royal Navy. Buoyancy, stability, oscillation, etc. Revised and enlarged edition of a book first published in 1889. Spine sunned, else VG $150
110. Wilgus, William. LIFE OF CAPTAIN STEWART DEAN. Ascutney, VT. 1942. b/w plates. 76 pp. plus folding tables. Dean was born in Maryland and went to sea as a young man, and commanded several privateers during the Revolutionary War. He was a resident of Albany, and there he built the 60 foot sloop Experiment, which he sailed down the Hudson and thence to China on an early American China trading voyage, the first of several he would make before the turn of the century. Scarce biography of a little known naval hero and China Trade pioneer. VG $200

112. Worcester, G.R.C. THE JUNKS AND SAMPANS OF THE UPPER YANGTZE. Shanghai. 1940. Color and b/w plates, several folding. 4to. (12), 96 pp. Scarce predecessor of Worcester’s authoritative two volume work. Worcester was a River Inspector in China and is the acknowledged expert on these craft. The text features 40 plates (several folding) of river craft, including a color plate of Chinese vessel pennants. This copy has a 5 line inscription in ornate calligraphy, signed by Worcester from Shanghai, 1948. Bound in original 1/4 leather over green cloth. VG See Illustration $450
