101. Ephemera. SAILOR’S POCKET JOURNAL AND PHOTOS FROM CRUISE ABOARD USS ALABAME, 1919. About 170 snapshots taken during 1919 maneuvers as the Alabama cruised to Cuba, Panama, New York, Provincetown, and Hampton Roads. The crewman, A.W. Duncan, was a member of the band aboard ship, and his journal is concise. The photos show numerous interior and exterior views of the ship, a crashed seaplane, and other wrecked vessels, harbor views, sailors, ports and the Panama Canal. The Alabama was part of Roosevelt’s Great White Fleet. This, apparently, was her last cruise before being decommissioned and used as a target by the Navy. $400
102. Ephemera SEVEN PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE CONSTITUTION. Seven 8 x 10 photo prints, with five showing interior or on deck details, and two shots of the hull. They were taken by professional photographer Earl M. Savage of Boston, and have his stamp of the back of most. Presumably they were taken during her refitting in the 1950s (?) Also included are 14 duplicates of these images. The lot of 21 photos. $75
103. Ephemera. SHIP’S PAPERS FOR THE WHALESHIP “GOLD HUNTER”, SIGNED BY PRESIDENT ANDREW JACKSON. This four-language broadside, measuring 20 1/2x 16 inches, gives permission for the whale ship Gold Hunter to leave Fall River for a whaling voyage to the Pacific on August 3, 1837, under master Clark Estis. In fact, she fished in the South Atlantic, returning on April 10, 1839, with 2,200 bbls. whale oil. (Starbuck, 338) SIGNED BY PRESIDENT ANDREW JACKSON and Secretary of State John Forsyth. With two seals. Small tear along crease line, slightly affecting Jackson’s signature, else VG. $2500
104. Ephemera. THE IRON CLAD FLEET OF ENGLAND. Lon. 1865 Folding linen backed sheet picturing two color lithos of 30 vessels, from Achilles to Zealous, with description of construction, propulsion, armour and armament for each ship pictured. Opens out to 20 x 15 inches. The caption reads, “The Royal Navy at the present time comprises about 735 vessels, of which 30 are Iron clads as above represented.” $150

Handsome card for this firm, operating from 55 Kilby St. with its factory on Norfolk Ave. in Boston. Loum Snow, Jr. president and B. C. Clark, treasurer. A wood engraved image of the factory is printed in light blue behind black lettering. $75

110. (Fulton, Robert.) TORPEDOES. n.p. n.d. (ie. NY. 1810.) pp. 111-119. This is the full text of a lecture Fulton delivered just after publishing his famous “Torpedo War...” in 1810. In this talk he explained his torpedo system in hopes of gaining government sponsorship to try it out on a real ship. The government awarded him $5000. He undertook his experiment, but his torpedo could not penetrate the nets and booms protecting the target ship. The speech was seperately published in pamphlet form; it appears here as an article in the March, 1810 issue of a magazine called the “Theophilantrophist.” Removed from larger volume, text clean and complete. $150

Edinburgh. 1886. 2 vols. xix, 66; 72 pp. Relation of two famous British naval battles of the late 16th Century. Grenville, Raleigh’s cousin. Commanded the fleet bound for Virginia. He pillaged the Azores in search of Spanish treasure ships, and was mortally wounded when his ship, the Revenge, was attacked by the entire Spanish Fleet. This is Raleigh’s account, supplemented by Hawkins, Monson and others. Two volumes, unopened, in prointed wrappers. VG $125

Mostly clocks and watches, a short chapter on marine chronometers that discusses them in terms of 18th century state-of-the-art watchmaking. Also, substantial sections on globes, armillary spheres, planetaria, sundials, etc. Intended mostly for collectors, but with detailed text to make it useful for general readers. VG, dj. $55

Color plates. 24 pp. Colored plates showing stylish men and women in sealskin and sea otter trimmed coats, shawls, muffs, capes. Also a plate of seals being clubbed, and one of the company’s showroom, bursting with stuffed specimens. A real artifact of a bygone day. Wraps on heavy stock, embossed and gold highlighted. $175

130. Johnston, Lt. James. CHINA AND JAPAN: BEING A NARRATIVE OF THE CRUISE OF THE U.S. STEAM FRIGATE POWHATAN IN THE YEARS 1857, ‘58, ‘59, AND ‘60. Phila. 1860. Color and b/w plates, maps. xii, 448 pp. The Powhatan was Perry’s flagship when the treaty with Japan was signed. She returned home with the new treaty and was immediately reassigned to the East Indian and China Squadron. This is the record of that cruise, now led by Josiah Tatnall, soon to be famous in the Civil War, as was the Powhatan. Johnston’s narrative is rich in detail about Japan and post-treaty China. It includes an account of Tattnall’s illegal complicity with the British in their attack on the Chinese, which Johnston refers to as “the generous and noble impulse which prompted him to render this unsolicited service.” The book features 8 color plates and two maps. A very scarce work about a little-known era in our naval history. Smith 2593. Rebound in calf over marbled boards with raised bands and gold lettering. Page edges darkened, scattered light spotting internally, but a tidy copy. $500

Huntress says, “The loss of the Birkenhead was one of the best known of 19th century wrecks.” A troop ship bound from Cork to South Africa she ran aground for no apparent reason in fine weather and broke completely apart. “Of the approximately 622 people on board only 192 were saved.” Huntress 381C. The point of this pamphlet, based on analysis of these three well known catastrophes, was that there needed to be a better way of lowering ships’ boats. 2nd ed. Removed from larger vol. Complete.
