4. American Line. IN WAR, IN PEACE. (NY. ca. 1898.) b/w ills. Unpaginated, about 75 pp. This is an advertizing brochure for the American Line, from New York to Southampton. It features many interior and at sea views of its steamers, several of which were pressed into service in the Spanish American War, and whose wartime careers are made much of here. The pamphlet is notable for its reproductions of art nouveau decorative elements used aboard the steamers - just this side of over-the-top. Illustrated wraps. $75 See Illustration

Chi. 1891. 164 pp. “An historical sketch of the discovery of America by the Norsemen in the tenth century.” Later edition of a much-read book originally published in 1874. Contains a 43 page bibliography of the pre-Columbian discoveries of American. VG. $45
7. Andrews, John. A DISCOURSE DELIVERED BEFORE THE MERRIMACK HUMANE SOCIETY, AND THEIR ANNIVERSARY MEETING, SPETEMBER 1, 1812. Newburyport, 1812. 32 pp. An interesting footnote says the British Humane Society had resuscitated over 7000 cases of “suspended animation” since their founding in 1774. With lists of members and funding. Removed from larger volume. $45
8. Andrews, Roy Chapman. WHALE HUNTING WITH GUN AND CAMERA. NY. 1928. b/w plates. xxi, 332 pp. “A naturalist’s account of the modern shore-whaling industry, of whales and their habits, and of hunting experiences in various parts of the world.” Thanks to Andrews’ camera many aspects of modern whaling operations are pictorially represented. Later printing. Bright copy of a scarce book, even scarcer in dustjacket. VG, chipped dj. $125
9. Anon. A CATALOG OF THE DAMAGES FOR WHICH THE ENGLISH DEMAND REPARATION FROM THE UNITED-NETHERLANDS. Lon. 1664. Sq. 4to. 75 pp. “As also a list of the damages, actions and pretenses for which those of the United-Netherlands demand reparation and satisfaction from the English. Together with the answer of the English...” This is a detailed list of complaints (seizures of ships, cargoes, factories, &c.) made by the English against the Dutch, followed by a rebuttal of the Dutch demands. A good many relate to the West Indies. There is also a section dealing with fishing rights off the Greenland coast. First state, with verso of title page blank. See European Americana 664/42 which remarks laconically, “Discusses West Indies.” Also Sabin 11492, which provides a bit more detail, “Relates to vessels captured on the coast of America, one of which was named the “May Flower.” Complete, with sewing holding, but no covers. $750
10. Anon. HARRY THE SHRIMPER. NY. n.d. b/w frontis. 16mo. 57 pp. A “toy” book, measuring about 4 1/2 inches tall, for juveniles, telling the story of a boy named Harry whose father was a shrimp fisherman in a town called Marblehead. Having been published in America, you’d think this would be Marblehead, Mass. but the rest of the story is patently British, suggesting it was stolen from an English printing, perhapsm with the the name of the town changed. Interesting, anyway. Harry learns that it is good to be useful and honest. $45
11. Anon. SKETCH OF THE OLD NEW BEDFORD WHALING BARK STAFFORD AND THE WHALING INDUSTRY. (Phila._ n.d. (ca. 1890. b/w cover and text ill. 12mo. 30 pp. This remarkable (and I trhink scarce) pamphlet begins, “The whaling bark Stafford, which came ashore at the foot of Michigan Avenue, Atlantic City, NJ. , on the evening of Tuesday, June 3, 1890...” the booklet gives a brief history of the Stafford, built in Kingston in 1848, and of the whaling industry. It also reproduces some log entries from the Stafford’s 1884 voyage.under Joseph Antone Viera (see Lund, pp. 664.) They made the Stafford into an Atlantic City tourist attraction, much like a 19th century Charles Morgan. This booklet was intended as advertising. 13. Anon. THE FEMALE WANDERER: A VERY INTERESTING TALE FOUNDED ON FACT. Wells’ River, VT 1826. 12mo. 60 pp. The title page continues, “Written by the Wanderer herself.” There is a lengthy note in Wright’s “American Fiction, 1774-1850” ascribing authorship to either Cordelia Stark or W.P. Thompson. In any event, the narrator, who calls herself Cordelia, meets a young man and falls into evil ways, travels abouty upstate New York, takes up with a rough crowd, shows up in New York City at the age of 18 with fifty cents in her pocket - well, you can imagine what happens next. Except, it doesn’t! She meets a sailor and signs aboard the merchant ship Paragon as a green hand. She conceals her sex from her shipmates and even accompanies them to a brothel. In New Orleans she goes out with the crew to see where General Jackson had fought. After travelling the Atlantic for a year and eight months, she returned home with her pay of $96, and was reunited with her beau, who turned out to be not such a bad guy afterall. Wright 943, who identifies one edition prior to this one. Good condition in original printed wraps. Edges chipped, text clean. $450 See Illustration

Lon. 1812, (19), 162, (6) 12 pp. Perhaps the most interesting feature of this old almanac are the catalogs of “Works published by the Commissionrs of Longitude and sold by J. Murray,” and “Catalog of the latest and most approved Charts, Pilots and Navigation Books published... by J. W. Norie & Co.” Covers present but detached. $35

Lon. n.d.. b/w plates, ills., folding color chart. xvi, 374 pp. 19th century edition of one of the great voyages of all times, a nearly unbelievable narrative of triumph over adversity, in the course of which Anson captured over £500,000 from the Spanish. In a nice full calf prize binding dated 1881. $2000

25. Beck, May Randlette. GREAT GRANDPA BILLIE. Mobile, AL. 1958. b/w plates. 280 pp. “A down easter’s adventures north and south from square rig to steam.” A father’s sea tales lovingly recounted by his daughter. Billie Randlette went to sea from the Kennebec River in the mid-1800s and eventually wound up as a riverboat captain, hence the southern place of publication. An interesting, if flowery yarn. A scarce book for us Yankees. VG, dj. $65

31. Bompas, George. LIFE OF FRANK BUCKLAND. Lon. 1885. b/w frontis. ix, 433 pp. Buckland was a sportman and a naturalist, and had much to do with the salmon fisheries in the UK and in New Zealand. He became Inspector of Fisheries and writes several chapters about salmon, north sea, and other commercial fisheries in the middle of the 19th century. Half calf over marbled boards, with raised bands, gilt decorations and red label. A nice copy. $50
32. Bookends. WHALE BOAT BOOKENDS. Two brass bookends, about 8” tall, reproducing the famous New Bedford monument. These bear the legends, “A Dead Whale or a Stove Boat” and “In honor of the whaleman whose skill hardihood and daring brought fame and fortune to New Bedford and made its name known in every seaport of the globe.” $400 See Illustration

It was issued as part of the fund raising effort for the Charles W. Morgan. A statement at the back says copies will be sent to “large contributors” “if sufficient funds are obtained to Save the Ship.” With a printed sheet of additional sketches by Gale laid in. A charming and, in my experience, scarce whaling item. Fine condition, in original wrappers and mailing envelope. $125 See Illustration

45. Briggs, L. Vernon. SCRAPBOOK ENTITLED “CRITICISMS. HISTORY SHIPBUILDING NORTH RIVER. A scrapbook of photos, letters and clippings relating to the publication of Briggs’ history of shipbuilding. Such as a letter from politician Robert Rantoul, on Essex Institute stationery, Briggs’ copyright certificate from the Library of Congress, similar acknowledgements from Boston Athenaeum, NE Hist. Gen. Full page letter in manuscript from Samuel Elliot Morrison stating that he had “made considerable use of it, I hope to good purpose” in writing his famed Maritime History of Massachusetts. Letter from shipbuilder William H. Webb ordering a copy for his academy, albumen photos of North River ships at Boston wharves pasted in throughout, as well as learned letters from other luminaries, and dozens and dozens of articles and clippings talking about the book and adding other local history tidbits. $650

Bos. 1865. b/w ills. in text. 68 pp. “With an analysis of the mode of measuring ships and vessels illustrated by formulae, diagrams, and full directions...” Butts, who authored several other guides for merchant seaman explicates this complex subject. 49. “Capt. Beadley, of the U.S.A.” JEM BUNT: A TALE OF THE LAND AND THE OCEAN. BY THE OLD SAILOR. NY. n.d. b/w cover and advert. ills. 112 pp. According to Halkett and Laing’s dictionary of pseudonyms, Jem Bunt was written by Matthew Henry Barker, R.N. Barker was the author of a famous English satire of naval affairs illustrated by Cruikshank in 1841. So this potboiler is an American ripoff of a better known English work. Fittingly, considering the piracy involved here, the work advertized on the back cover is called “The Pirate Doctor.” In original illustrated wrappers.
