| 83. | Stevenson, Robert. AN ACCOUNT OF THE BELL ROCK LIGHT-HOUSE, INCLUDING THE DETAILS OF THE ERECTION AND PECULIAR STRUCTURE OF THAT EDIFICE. Edinburgh, 1824. b/w plates. 4to. 533 pp. Stevenson was chief engineer of the Scottish Lighthouse board for 50 years, and practically inaugurated the Scottish lighthouse system. (See DNB) The Bell Rock lighthouse stands with Eddystone as one of the great early structures. One of the classics of lighthouse literature, by the engineering ancestor of the author R.L Stevenson, this work contains a frontispiece after Turner, an extra engraved title, and 21 plates and charts, many double page. Aside from being an exhaustive treatise on the construction of this difficult structure, it contains a history of lighthouses in the British Isles. The first Italian edition of John Mitchells original (1755) Map of the British and French Dominions in North America. Zattas version varies somewhat from Mitchells, most particularly in the title of his work, which represents perhaps the first time America is referred to as The United Colonies of America, no longer as British colonies. Zatta also included depictions of both Bermuda and Jamaica, not part of Mitchells original work, and the map of Bermuda is one of its more beautiful 18th century depictions. This copy has the contemporary bright colored borders and cartouche that Zatta is noted for in his maps. Bound in decorative early wallpaper laid down on wooden boards.
