| 77. | Ides, Evert Ysbrants THREE YEARS TRAVELS FROM MOSCOW OVER-LAND TO CHINA.... Lon. 1706. v b/w folding map, plates, some folding. 4to. 210 pp. First English edition of a rare and important account. Ides, a Dane in the service of Peter the Great, took a three year journey to China as Russian Ambassador in 1693-1695. According to Cox, Traveling as a public character, he had the leisure to observe anything of note... The Russian embassy had less trouble with the enormous self-esteem of the Chinese than many earlier and later embassies... Under the Emperor then ruling, Kang-hi, ministers were courteously received and enabled to transact their business as at any other court... Kang-hi was desirous of preventing Russian encroachments upon his territories and the Czar was anxious to establish a regular commerce with China. The expedition added considerable geographical knowledge to the little that was known about Northern Manchuria and China. - Cox I pp. 330-1. see also Cordier 2468 and Lust 519. Ides mission was also important in laying the groundwork for the Russian-Chinese fur trade, which was already in place when Cook and other westerners began to explore its potential. A Dutch version of Ides travels appeared in 1698, and the account was anthologized in early collections of voyages, but this is by far the most complete and best illustrated edition. It features a Description of China by a Chinese doctor who had converted to Catholicism, 30 engraved plates, several folding, and a large folding map. One of the plates has a stain on the fold, and text and plates show scattered light foxing. The folding map, often found missing, is in very nice condition. Bound in old vellum.
