The battle was known for its furious combat. This is one in a limited edition of 100 copies on large paper, privately printed and apparently intended for private circulation only. From 1896 - 1899 Churchill was United States Consul General at Samoa. He lived in Robert Louis Stevensons old house during these years and made a deep study of Polynesian languages. Folio. vi, 15 (list of subscribers), xlv, 375; 511pp. First edition of the most important biographical source. This is the standard life of Nelson, and it is largely used for all subsequent works. The authors had access to the greater part of, but certainly not all, the MSS. of Lord Nelson, then belonging to Earl Nelson; and a large body of Letters and Papers were sent to them by a great number of other persons, particularly by His Late Majesty, and by a lady who possessed Nelsons interesting letters to his wife, before and after their marriage. - Nicolas Dispatches and Letters of Lord Nelson, pp. x & xi. Lon. 1828. b/w plates, fldg battle plan xvi, 578 pp. Collingwood was one of the British seamen at the Battle of Bunker Hill. He then moved on to become one of Nelson's close associates, leading the lee line at Trafalgar, and actually moving through the allied fleet a few minutes before the Victory. By all accounts, he was a good friend, a brave fighter, and something of a grouch. This is the third edition of his life. This copy differs from the listing in NMM, having more pages and an extra plate (14 rather than 13 plates). A contemporary inscription is dated 1808. This edition probably contains additional material about the funeral, since the 14th plate depicts the funeral procession on the Thames. Some of the plates tanned, but a good copy in early 19th century full calf binding with gilt spine decoration and label. Spine top lightly chipped. | 48. | Ephemera. ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTION TO THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE ARMED VESSELS IF THE UNITED STATES. After President Monroe issued his Instructions to Privateers in the War of 1812, two additions were deemed necessary. This second addition orders privateers not to interrupt British shipping bound for Sable Island "laden with supplies for the humane establishment at that place." This probably refers to the lifesaving station that had long been established there, but may also refer to a leper colony said to have been set up on the remote island. Folded printed sheet measuring 7 1/2" x 71/2". Printed with American Eagle seal at top and dated November 7th, 1812 in type at bottom. Signed by James Monroe as Secretary of State. Two small holes at top of paper not affecting text. A fresh clean example of a rare document. $1200 |

A small sheet of folded paper pinned to the front of an 1819 edition of Miltons Poems says, in part, I Samuel Cooper... am going to ship my cable and sail into the presence of my Maker. the Proserpine was destroyed willfull... me and my mates Tom Welch with four others being in the cutter on her port quarter we saw two augur holes in her run about forty feet from her stern... its my belief Joe Wylie scuttled that our ship and cast away her people. Transcribed by a witness and bearing the marks of both Cooper and Welch, along with some suggestion of gold onboard being the motive. 122 words. Unusual, to say the least. $50 |
