A seafaring classic, both as marine art and as a key book about clipper ships. Spurlings watercolors and Lubbocks text make for an informative and lively depiction of clipper ship days. Good reading and excellent reference. These are all first editions, and each volume is limited to 1000 copies. Light foxing on each of the title pages, else clean throughout, with the stunning color reproductions bright. Minor wear to spine ends, else a VG set, clean and well bound in original blue cloth with gold decorations. 3 vol. $1000 |

NY. 1887. b/w ills. folding plates. 189 pp. Stephens authoritative work went through many editions in its day and is still sought after. It was originally issued in 1883, and this is a later, but unaltered edition. Although the title page says the book comes with 30 plates, there are only 29 listed and described, and a corresponding number in an accompanying printed envelope. Quite scarce. Toy 4989. There are a variety of articles containing information on individual vessels, cruises, technological advances, recent discoveries, and just plain gossip. The Naval Register for 1836 is also printed. Sample articles include Parsons on malaria, gales and hurricanes in the western Atlantic, quarantine systems, and seamens wages. Bound in original sheep with some coverwear. Folding chart a little foxed, else text clean. Quite scarce. $300 |

(2), 14 pages color plates, (9)-46 pp. A nice copy of a rare whaling book. With lists of agents and owners, vessels, and 6 pages of illustrated and fancy typeset ads for marine products. Text is clean and the 14 pages of hand colored plates of house flags are bright, with no foxing, spotting or offsetting. Light brown stain in the outer margin, receding as the book goes on. Minor cover wear, still a VG copy of a book that has become quite difficult to locate. $1500 |

Rulon-Miller list #11. This copy is from a library on Marthas Vineyard (almost all copies are from libraries, since Lawson distributed them by giving them to public institutions.) The sewing is shaken, with some pages coming loose, but binding, text and plates are cleaner than usual, making this quite a presentable copy. $750 |

Lon. 1834 b/w charts, plates. 2 vols. xi, 399; viii, 398 pp. An interesting account of a scientific expedition co-sponsored by the Admiralty and the Royal Society, to collect information on ocean currents, meteorology, etc. The Chanticleer stopped at Rio, Montevideo, Patagonia, the South Shetlands, Fernando de Noronha, San Luis, Belem, Trinidad, Porto Bello, and Panama. At this last port Captain Foster drowned after falling out of his canoe on the Chagres River. 2 vols. Bound in black calf over marbled boards. A very nice set. $1000 |
| 109. | Wilkes, Charles. NARRATIVE OF THE UNITED STATES EXPLORING EXPEDITION DURING THE YEARS 1838,1839,1840,1841,1842. Phila. 1845. b/w plates, charts, some fldg. 5 vols. various paginations. A landmark in American exploration, these are the records of the first U.S. government-sponsored exploring expedition. Besides establishing the U.S. as a global power, it returned a wealth of scientific detail and nearly as much controversy. This set is, in essence, the first popular edition. It came out the year after the first official edition, and was issued without the atlas, with woodcuts (about 300 in number) replacing the steel engravings, and with 10 of the 14 maps which appeared in the first edition. However the text is unchanged. Haskell 3, Hill p. 325, Judd 189. Bound in original government cloth with gold lettering and shield on front cover. Vols. I-IV are very bright and have an Addison Academy bookplate on the front pastedown. Vol V has been added to complete the set. The binding is uniform, but somewhat more worn at the spine ends. Amsterdam. 1719. b/w engraved plates, many folding. 4to. Two vols. in one. Title in red and black. (iv), 82, 94; iv, (3), 22 leaves of plates, 90 flag plates. This is an early 18th century compilation of the most important texts on shipbuilding, including Witsen whose 1671 work was The most famous Dutch contribution to the literature of shipbuilding. - See Scott, 192 and 123. Polak 56 notes that this edition is known as the French Allard and that, in addition to giving readers a French translation of Allards work on ship construction, it includes the work of Dutch experts Witsen and Van Eyk. This book also includes engraved plates of 90 national flags, 22 plates of shipbuilding, and 34 engravings in text. Front blanks and title chipped on lower corner, else clean and sound. Plates are also clean. Bound in contemporary full calf with raised bands, label and gilt spine decoration. $3500 See Illustration |
| 111. | Wood, William Maxwell. FANKWEI; OR, THE SAN JACINTO IN THE SEAS OF INDIA, CHINA AND JAPAN. NY. 1859. viii, 545 pp. The San Jacinto had an eventful tour in eastern seas. After proceeding via Madeira, Cape of Good Hope, Mauritius and Ceylon, she stopped at Penang to pick up the American consul general to Japan. She then stopped at Singapore and Bangkok, where the consul general negotiated a treaty with the individual who was later to be the subject of The King and I. Thereupon the San Jacinto headed for Japan, but had to put in for repairs at Hong Kong, a stay which extended to two months. Finally arriving at Japan, the consul general signed a treaty which opened Japan to the modern world. After this, the San Jacinto and Admiral Foote were involved in the civil unrest in Shanghai.
