Much of the artwork was exhibited at the Chicago World’s Fair, and for it Samuel Stanton was awarded a prize. The book was truly a labor of love. Unfortunately, some pervert has cut out page 20, which is the drawing of the steamship Fulton. Otherwise a good copy of a very scarce book usually found in tatters owing to poor binding materials and paper. $300 |

A Victorian landscape artist, John Syer (1815-1876) was a founding member of the Bristol Society of Artists. He was inspired by the land and sea scapes of England and Wales. Of most interest here is a 16 page biographical essay on Isaac and William Webb, including a full length portrait of William and a list of vessels. As far as I know, this material has not appeared elsewhere. The rest of the text seems to be a sample chapter about early steamboats entitled “Who Invented the Steamboat?” Quite an unusual item.
