(2), 84, (unpaginated tables, about 100 pp.), 6 pp. Quite popular in their day, Moore’s works had a ready public among mariners. This volume, largely extracted from his New Practical Navigator, was intended for the aspiring seaman. It contains instructions on navigation by lunars and dead reckoning, as well as other phases of seamanship. Third edition. Adams & Waters 2545. $300
160. Morison, Samuel Eliot. HISTORY OF UNITED STATES NAVAL OPERATIONS IN WORLD WAR II. Bos. Various dates. b/w plates, maps. 15 vols. Various paginations. A complete set of Morison’s definitive history of the US Navy in WW II. All except vols I and VIII are first editions. All except Vol II are presentation copies to Morison’s son Peter, and his wife, the mystery writer B.J. Morison. These are inscribed, variously, to “Peter,” “Peter & Betty Jane,” “the Jude Morisons,” etc. Morison signs his name in full, or with initials, or as “Dad,” or “the Old Man.” Vol II is signed by Morison, and noted by him as “the Widner Desk Copy.” It contains his extensive ms. notes and corrections throughout. Vols. VIII and XV are in dustjackets. Vols. I, II, V, IX and XI show rubbing and fading on the backstrips, all others VG. 166. Nickerson, Thomas. THE LOSS OF THE SHIP ESSEX SUNK BY A WHALE AND THE ORDEAL OF THE CREW IN OPEN BOATS. Nantucket. 1984 b/w plates, facsimiles. 87 pp. Owen Chase’s narrative of this event is one of the most famous in the literature. Nickerson was one of 5 men who survived the subsequent open boat voyage. The manuscript of his narrative was discovered in Connecticut and edited by Edouard Stackpole and Helen Chase, and published in this form in 1984. VG $50

Trade magazine for this important seaport, loaded with ads for marine services, shipyards and shipping lines. Published monthly, this three year run documents the effect of the Great Depression on New York shipping. Each issue also contains an abundance of local news, future plans, political bloviation and waterfront gossip. Interestingly, shipping seems to have been less radically affected by the economic decline than some other industries. 3 vols uniformly bound in blue buckram with gold lettering. $200

Bean, Builder, Camden, Maine, 1899. Capt J.G. Corwley, of Taunton, Mass. J.J. Wardwell, Designer and Master Builder. 44 feet 4 inches beam. 22 feet depth.” Some waterstaining along margins of cardboard. Photo is in excellent condition. Close inspection gives some idea of the scale of this vessel; the half dozen crew members seem tiny. $150
183. (Photography) COLLECTION OF 16 GLASS PLATE NEGATIVES OF KENNEBEC RIVER STEAMERS IN THE VICINITY OF BREWER AND BANGOR, MAINE. These are 4x5 inch glass plate negatives taken by an amateur photographer in the vicinity of Brewer and Bangor Maine about 1900. Seven of them depict the steamer Sedgwick - being built in the Cobb Bros. shipyard in Brewer, at launching, and underway. There are 3 scenes of Brewer, one a port view, one a parade float for Fleischmann’s Yeast, and one a horse drawn fire engine decked out in parade regalia. Also represented are steamers Katahdin, Frank Jones, Cimba, and Penobscot with Bangor in background. Minor chipping to emulsion at edges of some plates, otherwise all are in Very Good condition. Most are identified, some name captain of the vessel. Handwritten title is, “Capt. John Foster’s Way. Aug 1914.” Some of the fishing vessels are Gov. Cleaves, Louise Perry, Herman L. Rodgers. Priscilla II, and Eben A. Thatcher. Detail in most of the photos is quite good. $150

With contractors named and amounts given. Also a two page table of contracts and purchases made by collectors in the Revenue Service in 1811, including figures for vessels hired and supplies.
