According to Fairburn the merchantman Powhatan was built in Maine in 1835. The bill is docketed to the Welch on the Powhatan, but the vessel Eliza Warwick is pencilled in next to Welch’s name at the top of the bill. This bill is dated March 1835, meaning either a pretty quick sail across after a winter launching, or Welch in the Warwick buying for Powhatan. In any event it’s an interesting informative paper from a hardware standpoint. You can puzzle the rest of it out for only $50

More interesting is the narrative portion explaining the circumstances of the loss. This consists of 52 lines of written description of Lela’s rough passage to Cadiz in a gale, and the cargo that was lost as a result. With consular stamp and signature of the consul, Alexander Burton. VG $75
146. Manuscript. INSURANCE DOCUMENTS PERTAINING TO THE WRECK OF THE SCHOONER ENOS B. PHILLIPS OF PHILADELPHIA, 1887. Folio. 90 pp. manucript entries. These documents relate how the Enos B. Phillips hung up on a reef off the New Jersey coast during a gale enroute from Boston to Chester, PA in 1887. After weeks of salvage work in bad weather, they managed to get her free and tow her to Cramp’s shipyard in Chester, where she was refurbished. The papers include a narrative account, a survey, statements of general and particular average, listing all the fittings, cargo and labor, etc. This includes many pages of itemized labor and materials from Cramp’s shipyard, as well as other waterfront firms. An interesting look at the financial particulars of a late 19th century merchant schooner. Bound in stiff wrappers, VG $300
147. Manuscript. LOG OF SHIP AMITY ON THREE VOYAGES IN 1844 BETWEEN NEWBURYPORT, MOBILE, BOSTON AND LIVERPOOL. WITH ADDITIONAL RELATED MATERIAL. Folio. About 150 pp manuscript entries. Additional material includes an itemized bill ship ship repairs at Liverpool in Sept. 1844, a few pages of entries on the Amity’s voyage from Liverpool to Philadelphia, a letter of introduction for Captain Pike by a Liverpool merchant to a colleague in Philadelphia, several pages of French lessons, and several more pages of lunars worked out during a voyage of the Amity from Boston to Calcutta under a Captain Morse in 1845. These are of particular interest because they were, by definition ephemeral. Also included is an abstract log of the Calcutta voyage, and a two page narrative account of same. It is not clear who the author of this material is, but it may be first officer Daniel Gerrish, whose name appears elsewhere in these papers. Fairburn says Currier built a ship named Amity in Newburyport in 1843 for Robert Bennet Forbes. She was a “China packet and oriental general trader” and may be the ship referred to in these pages. A hodgepodge, but interesting. Binding broken, lacks covers. $200
148. Manuscript. PERSONAL JOURNALS OF CAPT. BENJAMIN THOMPSON, AS CAPTAIN OF CLIPPER SHIPS PERUVIAN PROGRESSIVE AGE, GREAT ADMIRAL AND COLUMBIA, 1860S-1870S 4 folio vols, approx. 600 pp. manuscript entries. These four journals illustrate the career of a clipper ship captain as he plied his trade between England, the east and west coasts of America, and Manila. The Great Admiral was a particularly well known medium clipper built in East Boston. The Maine-built Progressive Age later became the Evening Star. Thompson’s journals are intelligently written and highly detailed, both about shipboard and commercial operations. And there is plenty of drama in the details. Aboard the Great Admiral, for example, as she sped from New York to San Francisco in the midst of a three day gale, Thompson wrote, “William Shore, one of the quartermasters, missing, and the last trace of him was up in the miz topsail yard furling the sail. Suppose he must have fallen off to leeward, as no one saw him.” See Fairburn, Cutler, and Howe and Matthews for particulars on these vessels and on Capt. Thompson. 4 vols. Writing clean and legible. $2500
149. Manuscript. SEA JOURNAL OF WILLIAM PARKER. 1836-1837. Unpaginated, about 130 pp. This is an intimate account of a young boy’s adventure aboard a British merchant ship on a voyage from Liverpool to the west coast of South America for sealskins and dye wood. His hardships and duties are meticulously recorded. A mutinous seaman is set ashore with “nothing but what he had on.” There is a painfully detailed narrative of another boy who fell overboard and was drowned, or of another who died and was buried ashore, or yet another who broke liberty and got 16 lashes “which brought blood every time.” Parker also notes American whalers sighted in the Pacific, and scenes in Valparaiso and other South American ports. He returns home after “15 months out.” Overall a remarkable narrative that gives a real feel for the experience of a young boy at sea. Approx. 20,000 words. Old binding loose, housed in chemise and slipcase. $1250
150. Manuscript. THREE INVOICES WITH PHILADELPHIA CUSTOMS STAMPS. 3 folio sheets, folded. Invoices for linen and other fabrics shipped from Liverpool to Philadelphia in 1836 for the firm Wood & Abbott. Each bears a half round red stamp and embossed seal overstamped (corresponds to Scott RM575). Docketed for ships Susquehanna, Alleghany and Colossus. Nautical paper with a philatelic interest. The lot, VG $125
