109. Manuscript. LOG OF THE SHIP FAWN. BOSTON TO INDIA. 1817-1818. Unpaginated. About 200 pp. manuscript entries. An excellent and early account by the captain, William Austin, of an American vessel engaged in the India trade. The Fawn was a 436 ton ship built at Charlestown for William Gray, the greatest shipowner and merchant of his day. (By this point in his career he’d moved from Salem to Boston, taking with him Salem’s preeminence in maritime trade.) The Fawn traveled to India via Mauritius, where she put in at Port Louis, discharging leather, gin, lumber, fish and other articles he thought he might sell there. She proceeded to the northwest of India, then to Bombay. Austin sold his cargo on a low margin and purchased sugar, cotton, indigo, “elephant’s teeth” and alum. From Bombay, the ship returned to Boston. Daily entries detail weather, course, shipboard evolutions, vessels and landmarks sighted, and events of importance onboard. The log is enhanced by lengthy port entries, in Austin’s hand and signed by him, from Mauritius and India. In these sections he hashes out difficulties and details of trade, and records his process of deciding where to go and what to sell. References to “Mr. Gray” are frequent, and Gray’s best interests are never far from Austin’s mind. Quite unusual in this respect. Entries legible, text clean, boards detached but present. $2000
110. Manuscript. LUMBER OR SHIP YARD ACCOUNT BOOK. PHILADELPHIA, 1802-1808. Tall folio, about 400 pp. manuscript entries. Dated entries detail purchases and sales of lumber products such as pine boards, sap pine, hickory, barrel staves, tar, turpentine, spikes, as well as occasional bulk foodstuffs such as rye flour, pork or corn (and a wonderful debit on leaf 70, to George Lake for $1.50 cash “by your wife”). Also such items as cedar boat planks, “oak nees,” ship timbers, oak scantling and debits for wharfage, use of scow, etc. indicate proximity to the waterfront. Philadelphia names such as Mendenhall and Chew abound, and the last few pages contain later entries in pencil and a billhead from a Philadelphia commission merchant. Old boards, worn and detached. First few pages chipped on edges, otherwise text clean and legible. $350
111. Manuscript. NOTES ON A VOYAGE TO NEW ORLEANS ON THE SHIP CHARLES. 8vo. 32 manuscript pages. The Charles, of Danvers, departed Salem on December 22, 1823, with a crew of 20 and 9 passengers. The author of this journal, one of the passengers, writes in a colorful, almost novelistic, manner. A harsh gale over Christmas drove the ship 600 miles off course. The sprung a leak and, in the vicinity of Hole In The Wall, thought they were going to be overtaken by a pirate (which turned out to be a British naval vessel). They speak various naval and merchant vessels, pass north of Cuba, and arrive with several other vessels at Belize, awaiting a fair wind to New Orleans. After a week, the breeze is in their favor and they begin the 120 journey upriver. This occupies the last third of the journal, and goes into great detail about life ashore... Rice plantations, slaves, overseers and Indians. Passing the battleground, they finally reach the city, hidden behind its levee, and the journal ends. This is a richly descriptive account, in which we learn such minutia as what the crew were paid, or how the pilot rate was calculated, as well as how it felt to depart Salem, and the rich panoply of sights as they approached New Orleans. About 10,000 words. Text legible, bound in old gray wrappers. Housed in red cloth chemise and slipcase with black spine label. $1000
