155. “W.H.” (Rev. William Howell) SOME INTERESTING PARTICULARS OF THE SECOND VOYAGE MADE BY THE MISSIONARY SHIP THE DUFF; WHICH WAS CAPTURED BY THE BUONAPARTE PRIVATEER, IN THE YEAR 1800. Lon. 1809. 288 pp. On her second voyage to the south seas the missionary ship Duff was captured by a French privateer off the coast of Brazil and taken to Monte Video. After several adventures on shore and much religious sermonizing, they took passage to Rio and were put aboard two Portuguese ships of war which accompanied a convoy to Lisbon. A tedious narrative which nonetheless manages to impart a good deal of information about Monto Video and somewhat less about the French and Spanish navies of the Napoleonic era. See Borba de Moraes p. 943, who says that the Duff’s captain, Wilson, wrote a narrative in 1810 which used Howell’s description of the time spent in Monte Video. Last leaf torn with loss of a few letters (supplied in contemporary manuscript). Bound in original paper over boards with paper spine label. A nice physical specimen. $200
