| 103. | (Moore, J. J.) MARINER'S DICTIONARY, OR AMERICAN SEAMAN'S VOCABULARY OF TECHNICAL TERMS, AND SEA PHRASES, USED IN THE CONSTRUCTION, EQUIPMENT, MANAGEMENT, AND MILITARY OPERATIONS, OF SHIPS AND VESSELS OF ALL DESCRIPTIONS. Wash. 1805. b/w engravings. 12mo. (vi), 256 pp. First American edition of this mariners dictionary, first published in London, 1801, as The British Mariners Vocabulary. This edition features 8 copperplate engravings with 119 illustrations. Robert Smith, the second Secretary of the Navy, usually sent a copy of this dictionary to new midshipmen. It, like the navys regulations, was inspired, and, in part, copied from English sources. Moreover, its publisher, William Duane, one of the pioneer printers of Washington, made no attempt to hide the fact that his 1805 Dictionary was improved from an English work, (The British Mariners Vocabulary, attributed to J. J. Moore, and published in 1801.) He also took the liberty of dedicating the book to Robert Smith, Esq. Nevertheless, the secretary discontinued its distribution, perhaps due to the depletion of copies, in April, 1808... No other similar instructional book was provided gratis to young officers for years to come. A worthwhile practice had died aborning, and, furthermore, it was soon forgotten.--Skallerup, Books afloat and ashore, p. 111. Craig pp. 24-35. Sabin 44590. Adams & Waters 2547. Bound in original calf. lacks front blank. Front board nearly detached.
