(xvi,) 375; viii, 368 pp. A level-headed missionary with a keen eye for detail and a rich prose style, Snow gives us much natural history and ethnology of the Falklands, Monte Video, Tierra del Fuego, Cape Horn and surrounding islands, including the story of a young Fuegan who was taken to England for three years, then returned to his homeland. Observations include natives, birds, seals and sea lions, and much on shipwrecks. Snow worked diligently on the Arctic search for Sir John Franklin, and this work records some of his observations on that subject. He was offered a commission in the Confederate States Navy, declined it, and wound up in New York. See D.N.B. for an account of his life. Torrey went to sea on a whaler out of New Bedford and served on several whaling, sealing and merchant voyages over 14 years. Included in the narrative are descriptions of his life in the Marquesas (where he participated in cannibalism), his visits to Hawaii, California, the Northwest Coast, South America, and other places. Torrey apparently had a quick temper, for he ran into trouble with several of his captains, and left ship a number of times.
