The text is in Dutch but both volumes are profusely illustrated with vintage photos of vessels, dock scenes, fishermen, ports, maps, old prints, and lines and plans, several folding of sail and power fishing vessels. 67. Drayton, Daniel. PERSONAL MEMOIR OF DANIEL DRAYTON... Bos. 1855. b/w frontis. 122 pp. Drayton was a captain in the coasting trade. He briefly recounts his adventures in this business, including a couple of shipwrecks, but the bulk of this narrative concerns his commandeering the schooner Pearl in an attempt to help a cargo of runaway slaves escape in 1848. He was caught and ultimately wound up in jail. This book was published in order to raise money for him. Sabin 20912. Minor wear, else VG. $300

71. Ephemera. 26 PHOTO PRINTS OF NORTH ATLANTIC COMMERCIAL FISHERIES. Plymouth, MA. monochrome prints. These are 26 prints distributed by the Plymouth Cordage Company illustrating trawling, dory fishing, gillnetting, and net mending, as well as many character studies. The smallest print (9.25” x 8”) is creased. The rest (most are 14” x 11”) have light wear along the margins. Most have descriptive cards paperclipped to the corner. $125

74. Ephemera. BROADSIDE. POOR TOM THE GREEK. AIR-FLOWERS OF EDINBURG. BY CAPT. JACK RATLING. n.p. n.d. 6.4” x 11.4”. “Ratling’s” rhyming rant against cruel captains and the lack of justice for their actions reads like a cautionary tale. Poor Tom, a jolly fellow aboard the Intrepid, was beaten and set adrift to die. The cruel Captain “by a jury was let go free/ To whip and beat Sailors on the ocean and the sea.” Small tears to top and bottom edge, still very attractive with a decorative border and etching of a ship. $50

Commercial Mutual Marine Insurance Company’s printed policy filled out in manuscript and signed by two officers of the Company. Made out to Wm Hathaway. Includes the provision “to add one percent for each season the vessel goes north of 32 degrees in the Pacific Ocean on right whale grounds.” VG. $125
77. Ephemera. LETTER EXTOLLING THE MONITOR RAFT. Nantucket. April 22, 1884. 8” by 10.5”. This printed letter by F.C. Sanford praises the life saving Monitor Raft for how easy it is to inflate and set out, how well it handles, and its capacity. Sanford writes “The men of the Monitor said,as they struck the shore, that they could beat anything afloat, and would go to Bermuda in this craft.” Short tear and smudge not affecting text, creased across the middle. VG. $75
