201. McFarland, Raymond. A HISTORY OF THE NEW ENGLAND FISHERIES. (Gloucester 2002) b/w maps. 457 pp. Published by the University of Pennsylvania in a limited quantity in 1911, this authoritative history is for some reason practically impossible to locate. Aside from the 19th century works of Goode and Sabine, it is probably the most important and comprehensive work on the topic. Therefore, we've reprinted it on wide margined acid free paper and bound it in sturdy blue buckram with handsome gold spine lettering and decoration. I did see an a copy of the original last year for $250. Our new reprint is only $65

227. Prize Court Papers. BEFORE THE MOST NOBLE AND RIGHT HONORABLE THE LORDS COMMISSIONERS OF APPEALS IN PRIZE CAUSES. GUTE ERWARTUNG; BEREND HENRICK GAY, MASTER. Folio. 8 pp. This and the next six items are prize court cases from the era of the Napoleonic Wars. They contain detailed and obscure facts regarding merchant shipping and naval practice of those days. The dispute here is between two lieutenants, Lt. Willaim Henry Douglas of the gun-brig Cracker, and Lt. Arthur Stowe of the gun-brig Steady, as to who actually made the capture, and who therefore feels entitled to the prize. Circumstances of the capture are recited and argued in detail, and a grand struggle for the spoils ensues, with several other parties joining the fray. If I am interpreting all the legal jargon correctly, the Steady won the case. VG in paper wrappers. $100

Folio. 6, 5, 29 pp. On November 29, 1809 Der Friede, sailing under Bremen colours with a cargo of linseed with His Majesty’s License on board, was captured by His Majesty’s Cutter Cheerfull and brought to Aberdeen. Light spotting to margin of back pages. VG in paper wrappers. $80
229. Prize Court Papers. EUROPA V. MARS. Folio. 4, 6, 18 pp. The Danish Europa filled with general merchandise was captured on July 11, 1807 by the Private Ship of War Mars. One page and back page torn with no loss. VG in paper wrappers. $80
230. Prize Court Papers. INVIDIATO V. BETSEY. Whitehall. 1809. Folio. 2,3, 12 pp. This was a Turkish ship carrying cotton, camel and goat hair, captured by the British privateer Betsey enroute to Amsterdam. Though the Turks were not at war with the Brits, the prize court declared the capture legitimate. $75
231. Prize Court Papers. KLEINE JURGEN V. HAPPY RETURN. Whitehall. 1808. Folio. 6, 4, 23 pp. Danish merchant ship, Kleine Jurgen, enroute to Spain carrying linen, glass and candles, was seized in 1806 by the British privateer Happy Return. These documents record the initial claim and appeal. They state in detail the military situation at the time and the circumstances of the capture. $80
