(Wash) 1822. 496 pp. In 1807 Barron, in command of the Chesapeake, was stopped on the high seas by the British frigate Leopard and ordered to surrender three alleged deserters. Barron refused and the Leopard opened fire. The Chesapeakes decks were too cluttered with stores for her to return fire and Barron tried to surrender. The Leopard refused this, seized the men and sailed away, leaving the Chesapeake to limp into port. Barron was tried and convicted only of neglecting to clear his ship for action. It was a humiliating incident for Barron and for America, and it led to the War of 1812, and Barrons duel with Decatur, who Barron claimed bore false witness against him. Smith II, 3561, who says this is the first publication of the trial, held 14 years earlier. Pages tanned, untrimmed and partially unopened. Title page stained.
