| 129. | Manuscript. ACCOUNT BOOK OF SCHOONER JOSIAH WHITEHOUSE, 1869-1872. Folio, about 70 manuscript pages. Account books can be spectacularly boring, but this one is interesting. Its itemized entries of expenses and income detail this coasting schooners career over three years. She worked between Washington and Boston and all the charges she incurred for repairs, towage, lighterage, pilotage, and wharfage and other port charges are recorded for each port she stopped at. Types of repairs are itemized, so we get some idea of the sort of maintenance required to keep her afloat. Likewise, income for each trip, minus itemized deductions gives a close view of the business operations of a coasting schooner of this era. VG, clean and legible. $350 |
| 130. | Manuscript. COLLECTION OF 4 LOG BOOKS, 4 ACCOUNT BOOKS, 2 BOOKS OF MISCELLANEOUS FAMILY ACCOUNTS AND ABOUT 40 LOOSE DOCUMENTS PERTAINING TO THE CAREER OF THE PACKET SHIP FRANCIS DEPAU AND HER MASTER CLEAVELAND A. FORBES. 1831-1876. The Francis Depau was a 595 ton full rigged ship built in New York in 1833 by Bell and Brown, for the New York-Havre trade. She was slow, and is mentioned in Fairburn as having one of the longest westbound passages of her day. In 1836 she suffered an accident at Havre, where she was condemned and sold to be repaired and used as a sailing tramp. (Fairburn II, p 1114. ) In fact, she proved to be serviceable, and in 1836 became part of the Orleans Line, and by 1843, part of the Merchants Line. She disappears from the record in 1849, when she was sent to California for the Gold Rush. In the middle of her career she did much business in the south, carrying cotton and passengers from Savannah, Mobile and New Orleans. The log books begin in 1836, just after her incident in Havre, and continue through to 1843. The Depau account books run from 1833 to 1839. As well as the vital financial affairs of the ship, they include freight, crew and passenger lists, wage dispersements, copies of letters, and even 4 pages of sailing instructions issued to Forbes from New Orleans in December, 1836. The loose documents include materials relating to the Havre incident - three letters of protest, with consular signatures and stamps, and several bills, appraisals and affidavits. Forbes was from Perth Amboy, NJ, and there is also documentation of family accounts and domestic business, as well as Forbes personal journal ashore from 1855 until his death in 1857. One of the log books has a very nice pencil drawing of the Francis Depau, and there are several other drawings of ships and landfalls among these documents. The items are generally in excellent condition, with the exception of one of the log books, which has binding wear and water damage over the last few pages. A wonderful collection, easily exceeding 1000 pages, and one which should provide ample material for serious study. See Fairburn, Merchant Sail. Cutler, Queens. Cutler, Greyhounds. $3000 |

| 132. | Manuscript. LETTER BOOK OF WILLIAM UPTON, 1844-1856. About 155 pages of manuscript entries. This is the copy book of William Upton, a civil engineer who worked in the Crimea preceding the war, building a cast iron dry dock at Sevastapol for the Russian governement. The first half of this book covers the years 1844-45, and deals with building the dry dock. Because he was employed by the Russians, he became, technically, a prisoner of the English during the war. The second half of the book is taken up with his correspondence regarding his prisoner status, and compensation for losses of personal property he suffered when the British took over. Copies of letters regarding this matter are addressed to all levels of the bureaucracy, from low officials to the Emperor Napoleon 3rd. He also writes to the London Daily News with a detailed plan for beautifying the banks of the Thames. Finally, he relocates to Canada. Laid in are two letters attesting to his usefulness to the allies during the Crimean War. A fascinating document on many levels, not the least of which are the construction of the Russian dry dock, and the eye witness reports of the Crimean War. In vellum notebook, clean and legible. $850 |
| 133. | Manuscript. SEAMANS AUTOBIOGRAPHY, 1830-1845. 46 manuscript pages. This is a 15,000 word autobiographical fragment by a Newburyport seaman named Collins. The front leaf is missing, and probably the back conjugate leaf as well, so the account is lacking a beginning and an ending. But the middle is complete and fascinating. Collins begins his career (and his narrative) on coasting and fishing vessels, and is apprenticed to a blockmaker in the winters. He decides to pursue a life at sea, attends a school for navigation in Philadelphia, and commences a career at sea, again aboard coasting vessels and Liverpool packets. He marries in 1837 and takes up shoe making in the winters. By 1841 he is undertaking his own voyages or sailing as an officer. However, he is either an indifferent sailor or a difficult shipmate because he constantly has trouble finding work. In 1842 he resolves to quit the sea and open an ice cream store in Belfast, Maine. This lasts a few months and then hes back at sea, scuffling for work. He takes a steamboat to Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, and likes the midwest a great deal, but does not move there. The narrative ends in 1845, on his return from Nova Scotia. An immense amount of detail is recorded. Every ship, officer and port in his career are named. We get strange glimpses of the trade, as when, in 1841, he sails to the Isles of Shoals to get fish to take south, but the winter is so mild that the fish wont freeze, and the venture is called off. He escapes a yellow fever epidemic in New York, and turns down a chance to take a schooner to Africa on a high risk slaving cruise. I reflected I had a wife and three boys which I thought would like to see me once more before I died. In all an informative and highly detailed account of an American sailors life. Some staining, but legible throughout. $750 |
