He disproved the existence of a continent between South America and the Antarctic ice shelf, and his belief in land beyond the ice took him past the Antarctic circle. "Cook made an astonishing series of discoveries... including Easter Island, the Marquesas, Tahiti and the Society Islands... This voyage produced a vast amount of information concerning the Pacific peoples and islands, proved the value of the chronometer, and improved techniques for preventing scurvy"-Hill. Crapo also recounts his career as a whaler and merchant sailor. He was obviously an excellent seaman but pushed his skill too far when he attempted an Atlantic crossing in a 9 foot boat. NY. 1844. b/w plates. 12mo. 72 pp. After a rough passage in November, 1843, the Liverpool packet Sheffield struck Romer Shoal off New York. She sent up rockets which were seen by Capt. Vanderbilt of Staten Island who came to their rescue in his vessel, the Wave, a Staten Island steamboat. All 130 passengers and crew were safely rescued, making this a rather unusual event in the tragic annals of shipwrecks. The book is unusual in that the events it narrates are illustrated by 5 wood engraved prints. After treating of this event, the author cites other shipwrecks as examples of God's divine intervention. He was also the author of several "real" books, and these little accounts move along at a professional clip. This one takes him racing and visiting along the New England coast. Limited to 125 copies. Reporting on annual mackerel catch in each port. There is a space for narrative remarks, and some of the forms contain such remarks on the scarcity of mackerel and the impossibility of determining how many were caught inside the three mile line, etc. Each form filled out and signed by the local magistrate. With statement of the Treasury Department as to the tonnage of vessels employed in the cod and mackerel fisheries, 1866-1876. Printed official form signed by John Sherman who was Secretary of the Treasury in 1877, the date of its issue, and a manuscript table showing tonnage of vessels. About 50 items. $75 |
