Beechey's expedition, very important in its day, acted in conjunction with Franklin and Parry in an attempt to discover a northwest passage. Beechey visited, among other places, Pitcairn (where he interviewed John Adams), the Society Islands, Hawaii, Tahiti, Alaska, Macao, Okinawa, and the California coast. This work presents the specimens in the order they were actually collected on the expedition, from Rio in 1825, through the Pacific and Sandwich Islands in 1826, China, California and Mexico in 1827, and Mexico and Rio in 1828. Hundreds of drawings fill the 100 engraved plates, with scientific description in text. This work receives only passing mention in the Hill collection. It was neither in the collection nor seen by the cataloguer. (See Hill p. 350) The plants of California are described on pp. 134-165 and 316-409, and pictured in plates 30 and 72-95. (See Meisel, III p. 405) Hooker was a very prolific writer, who authored over 40 books, but this title almost never appears in the trade. The last time it came up at auction was an ex-library copy with a torn plate that sold for $737 in 1978. This copy is bound in original morocco with gilt floral border and gold spine decoration and lettering. Scattered foxing, some rubbing, but clean and tightly bound. $5000 |
