1. A Poor "Member of Christ." FRIDAY CHRISTIAN: OR THE FIRST-BORN ON PITCAIRN'S ISLAND. NY. 1849. b/w frontis. 138 pp. Odd retelling of the Bounty and Pitcairn stories. According to the anonymous author, it was written to raise funds for a mission in the wilds of Missouri. Details the lives and deaths of the mutineers on Pitcairn, and the life of the colony up to 1825. The author includes Folger's 1814 visit, but information stops after 1825. Religion, despite the title and chapter headings from psalms, is kept to a minimum. Not in any bibliographies that I know of. No holdings on OCLC. Wear to spine ends else a good copy. $350

Lon. 1787-1789. b/w engraved frontis., 2 folding maps. 4 vols. 4to. lxxxviii, 556; 647; 508 plus indices; 718 plus index. Second edition, revised and brought up to date, of a book first published in 1764. Lowndes calls it "A justly celebrated and valuable work" and indeed it is highly detailed and very specific for each branch of trade. Obviously shipping and the fisheries played a great part in England's commercial life, and these topics are thoroughly covered here. The several indices make this massive tome easy to use. An excellent reference for the minutia of commerce, finance and international trade from medieval times up through the 18th century. Lowndes, p. 40. 12. Arnold, Thomas. THE AMERICAN PRACTICAL LUNARIAN, AND SEAMAN'S GUIDE... Phila. 1822. b/w plates. xviii, 844, 71 pp. First and only edition of a very scarce and rather extraordinary work; being a sort of combination of Bowditch's Practical Navigator and Blunt's Shipmaster's Assistant, and perhaps created to cash in on the success of these two works. Contents include tables and navigational instruction, as well as natural history, astronomy, sailing directions, practical seamanship, gunnery, naval tactics and "several sketches of trade not generally known" (Sumatran pepper trade, Moka and Smyrna coffee, Isle de France, Bourbon and Batavia trades, salt trade, West Indian molasses and China trade). This is followed by a section of information for shipmasters, including duties, marine law and insurance. Scattered foxing, some of the16 plates tanned but quite a nice copy in original calf, rebacked with raised bands and spine label. Not in Karpinski or Sabin. American Imprints 7840. $1000

18. Bates, Mrs. D.B. INCIDENTS ON LAND AND WATER, OR FOUR YEARS ON THE PACIFIC COAST. Bos. 1857. b/w plates. 336 pp. "Being a narrative of the burning of the ships Nonantum, Humayoon and Fanchon, together with many startling and interesting adventures on sea and land." Hill speculates that Mrs. Bates "was possibly accompanied by an arsonist, having three ships burn up under her, and a large part of San Francisco burn down soon after her arrival in California. Included are both her voyage to San Francisco via the Cape and the return voyage by way of Panana."—Hill p. 18. Cowan p. 38. This is the 3rd edition. 25. Blunt, Edmund M. THE AMERICAN COAST PILOT. Newburyport. 1806. b/w fldg. charts. xii, (30), 16-408 pp. This is the fifth edition, and apparently an unrecorded third issue of Campbell 5. In his note to the entry for this edition Campbell speaks of a second issue in which a single terminal page, "Directions For sailing by Georgetown Light-House," was appended. A note at the bottom of the final page of this copy says, "Since this work was put to press, the Light-House which stood on North Island... was blown down." See Campbell, p. 103. This copy is waterstained along its bottom margin, and the stain intrudes into the edge of about half the 13 plates. One signature loose. Bound in original calf with spine label and gold spine rules. Bottom portion of backstrip cracked. $350

Lon. 1812. b/w plates, fldg map. vi, 490 pp. Burney was a naval instructor at the Naval Academy at Gosport, and was also the author of The Naval Heroes of Great Britain. With 8 engraved battle scenes and folding map. Anecdotes, historical narratives and lists of vessels depict British Navy on the eve of the War of 1812. The first edition of this work was published in 1807. This styles itself "A new edition Illustrated with Plates." Not in NMM Cat. Contemporary calf, rebacked with spine label. With inscription on front blank dated 1816. $400
