| 51. | Forbes, Robert B. PERSONAL REMINISCENCES. Bos. 1882. b/w frontis. x, 412 pp. Forbes' work is one of the liveliest American autobiographies and a rich source of information on the China Trade, of which Forbes was a pioneer. He made his first trip to China at age 13; at 20 he received command of his own ship for a 3 year voyage around the world; by age 30 he had made a fortune; by age 34 lost nearly all of it, and then by age 36 regained it. In later years he became a ship owner and builder and was responsible for improvements in lifesaving devices and ships' rigs. This is the second edition, containing chapters on the Opium War, Hoqua and other Chinese merchants, and various British and American China Trade merchants, as well as a list of vessels built by Forbes. This edition is illustrated with albumen photographs of paintings depicting Forbes, Hoqua, the Jamestown and A. Heard. Howes F-244. Smith F49. Some wear to binding and spotting on covers, but a serviceable copy, with albumen photos clean. $200 |
| 52. | Freeman, Hattie Atwood. A TRIP AROUND THE WORLD ON BOARD THE MERCHANTMAN BARK "CHARLES STEWART" OF NEW YORK. n.p. 1907. b/w photo plate, b/w ills. 100 pp. Ms. Freeman traveled around the world as a 17 year old with her father, Capt. Horace Atwood, in the early 1880s. She is a humorous and genial writer with a very sharp eye for detail. Her scenes of life aboard ship and in port are striking and well rendered, always from a young lady's point of view. The book contains a photo of the author, as well as an orginal silver print of a painting of her father's ship. Women's narratives at sea are always of interest, the moreso in this case because the book is quite scarce, if not rare. A note at the back says it was printed in Bangor Maine in a limited edition, after which the type was distributed. Worldcat shows no institutions holding copies. (8) xiv-360 (4) pp. "To which is added a treatise on the putrid bilious fever, commonly called yellow fever; and other such diseases as are indigenous or endemical, in the West Indian islands..." Second edition of one of the best known early treatises on Caribbean diseases, this work includes good accounts of lead colic and infactive hepatitis, and was the first to give a correct description of tropical sprue. Far more sailors died of yellow fever in the West Indies than from combat, so books like this were of great contemporary interest. Sabin 31877, Garrison & Morton, 1770. | 63. | Hind, Henry Youle. THE EFFECT OF THE FISHERY CLAUSES OF THE TREATY OF WASHINGTON ON THE FISHERIES AND FISHERMEN OF BRITISH NORTH AMERICA. Halifax, NS. 1877. Small folio. xx, 169 pp. A detailed and little known work, in which the author argues that the fisheries provisions of the Treaty of Washington deprive British North American fishermen of prime grounds in an already depleted fishery. In the course of his study, a wide range of fishery topics are covered in detail. These include fish species and fisheries methods and gear, as well as such minutia as "the cucumber odor of the caplin." It is interesting that, even in 1877, the author could speak of "the destruction of the Cod Fisheries on the coasts of New England." A cancel pasted on the front wrapper says "Part I" but this work is complete in itself - including a very useful index, bibliography and various appendices. A second identical copy does not have the "Part I" cancel, and no mention of any other parts is printed on either title page. Self wraps, somewhat spotted, pages dog eared, otherwise clean and sound. Each copy, $125 |

| 71. | Kemp, Dixon. YACHT ARCHITECTURE... Lon. 1885. b/w folding plates. xii, 470 pp. plus plates. First edition of Kemp's major work on 19th century yacht architecture, with 84 folding plates. Encyclopedic in scope and handsomely executed, with American as well as British material. "Kemp was a central and extremely influential figure in yachting and yacht designing. His work is of great importance. In this volume he discusses displacement, buoyancy, proportions, steam engines, rigs, designing, building etc., and analyses forms of existing yachts." Toy 4762. Morris & Howland p. 76. A clean, fresh copy. $600 |
| 72. | Kemp, Dixon. YACHT ARCHITECTURE. Lon. 1897. b/w folding plates. xi, 548 pp. Third and best edition of Kemps important work, and the final one as well. This edition is sufficiently rare that neither Toy nor Morris and Howland list it. The book appears in two formats - one with the plates separately bound, and the other with the whole shebang bound into a single volume, as is the case here, making it easily the fattest book on yacht architecture ever printed. This copy bulks out at 5 1/2" thick. Toy, speaking of the second edition says, His work is of great historical importance." Kemp discusses theoretical and practical aspects of design, laying off, building and rigging. He also has two chapters on steam yachts and their own particular design considerations. The 107 folding plates include lines of many classic yachts of the day. Unfortunately the book's monster format has severly stressed the binding. Both hinges have been repaired, but are weaking again. The edges of many plates appear to be chipped, but these are the outer edges in most cases. Only two plates are chipped along the folds. Bound in full blue calf with raised bands. $850 |

An important book on 19th century yacht design, building, rigging and sailing; the more valuable because it approaches these topics from an American perspective, with many American yachts and designers represented. Generously illustrated with in-text line cuts and 63 full page and folding plates. This is the second edition. The first was published two years earlier and is identical in every respect to this one. Toy 4763 (citing 1891 ed.) Morris & Howland p. 80. The book was made of abysmally bad materials, and copies are usually found badly chipped and/or coverless. This copy, however, is immaculate, showing only light wear to the spine ends, with covers bright, binding sound, and pages clean and fresh. Rare thus. $1000 |
